Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check
You can’t walk into a CRA office and get your return done at a counter. The CRA’s own office page says there is no walk-in counter service at its office locations, so CRA offices are mostly mailing points and back offices, not places to visit.
There is no walk-in counter service at these locations.

Where do you go instead of a CRA office?
What you came to do decides it. The CRA points people to a short list of channels, and most of them work from your kitchen table.
| You want to | What the CRA points you to |
|---|---|
| File a return | NETFILE through certified software, or mail a paper return to your tax centre |
| Pay a balance | Online banking, the CRA’s My Payment service, or pre-authorized debit |
| Pay in person | Your bank or credit union, or a Canada Post outlet |
| Drop off paper | Not possible at a drop box, since they closed for good on May 29, 2026 |
| Ask a question | A CRA account, online chat for some topics, or the phone lines |
Most people never need more than the first three rows. Software files the return without a trip anywhere. For payments no official posting time turned up in the pages we read, so pay a few days before the due date and leave a cushion.
We’re deliberately not listing street addresses or opening hours here. Those change, and the CRA keeps the current mailing addresses on its own “find an address” page. Use that page, not a copy on someone else’s site, before you put a return in the mail.
What happens when you phone?
Expect a wait. When we read the CRA’s contact page, it said some calls were being sent to an automated line and that average waits were about 30 minutes. That figure moves with the season, so treat it as a rough guide.
So have your details ready before you dial: social insurance number, last year’s notice of assessment, and the exact line or letter you’re asking about. It saves a second call. And if the question is about a balance, try your CRA account first, because it often shows the answer. A coffee in hand helps too, especially near tax time when the lines are at their worst.
Is there free help you can see in person?
Sometimes. The CRA lists a volunteer tax clinic program for people who qualify, and it says small business owners and the self-employed can get free online or in-person help, including a visit from a liaison officer. The income limits weren’t on the pages we found, so check the eligibility rules there before you go. A clinic is a place run by volunteers, not a CRA counter.
What does a mailed return look like next to a filed one?
Take someone with $80,000 of employment income in Ontario and $13,000 already withheld. Our tax refund calculator gives a $1,127.85 balance owing on 2026 rules. That’s small enough to pay in one online banking transfer, with no need to stand in a line anywhere. Think of Noor in Winnipeg doing the same sum on a Sunday night: a quick transfer from her chequing account, a screenshot of the confirmation, done, and no trip downtown.
If you’d rather see the whole bill first, the income tax calculator splits it into federal and provincial parts. Anyone who expects to owe again next year can plan ahead with the tax instalments calculator, which sets out four equal payments. And if the year is going to bring a refund, the GST/HST credit calculator shows a payment that comes on top of it.
What if you got a letter telling you to visit?
Read it twice, then check it. Sign in to your CRA account and see whether the same request shows up there, or phone the number on the CRA’s contact page rather than one printed in the message. Given that the offices have no walk-in counter, a message telling you to turn up in person deserves a second look.
What if you’ve mailed something and need to know it arrived?
Keep proof when you post a return or a document. Use a tracked mail service, note the date, and keep a copy of everything you sent. With the drop boxes gone, the mail is the main paper route, so the receipt from the post office is your evidence. Then check your CRA account a few weeks later to see whether the return shows as received.
Mistakes people make with CRA offices
Driving to an office with a payment. There’s no counter, so pay online or at your bank.
Mailing a return to the wrong centre. Tax centres differ by area, so look up the right one on the CRA’s address page.
Dropping paper in a box that’s gone. The drop boxes closed on May 29, 2026.
Trusting a website that claims to be an office. Start from the CRA’s own site, and be careful with any page that only imitates it.
Where does this come from?
The office, drop box and payment details come from the Canada Revenue Agency‘s office locations and contact pages, read in September 2026. The free help programs come from its tax help page. This is an independent guide, separate from any government body.
