How much sales tax lands on a purchase depends on the place of sale. In Alberta and the territories you pay just the federal GST at 5%. The Atlantic provinces and Ontario use a single blended rate. British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba add a separate provincial tax, and Quebec has its own QST.
For a fast answer at any rate, open the GST and HST calculator. Type a price to add tax, or a total to strip it out. That’s most of what you’ll need.
Which calculator matches your province?
- GST / HST Calculator
Add or remove GST and HST for any province or territory.
- Reverse HST Calculator
Take GST or HST out of a price that already includes tax and see the price before tax.
- GST and PST Calculator
Add or remove GST and PST in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
- GST and QST Calculator (TPS and TVQ)
Add or remove the GST and the Quebec sales tax, with the QST worked out on the price before GST.
- New Home GST/HST Rebate Calculator
Estimate the federal and Ontario rebates on the GST or HST paid on a new home, including the first-time buyer rebate.
A receipt gives you the total, but sometimes you need the price before tax, and doing that sum in your head at 13% isn’t fun. The reverse HST calculator strips the tax out. Where a separate provincial tax applies, use the GST and PST calculator, and in Quebec use the GST and QST calculator.
What about new homes and business costs?
New homes carry tax on the purchase price, although part of it can come back. The new home rebate calculator estimates that refund. Land transfer costs are a different matter and they don’t belong here. They sit under the property transfer tax section of the site.
If you run a registered business, you can claim back the tax you pay on your costs, and that’s why so many invoices show the tax on its own line, even when the buyer is another business that won’t keep it either.
Rates are for 2026. That’s all. When a province changes its rate, we update the tool and note it on the page.
Frequently asked questions
What separates GST from HST?
GST is the 5% federal tax. HST rolls the federal and provincial parts into one rate in provinces that agreed to it, such as Ontario at 13%.
Does every province charge PST?
No. British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba do. Quebec charges QST, while Alberta and the territories have no provincial sales tax.
How do I take tax out of a total?
Divide by 1 plus the tax rate, which is 1.13 at 13%. The reverse HST tool runs that sum for you.
Is there tax on groceries?
Basic groceries are zero-rated for GST and HST. Prepared food, snacks and restaurant meals are generally taxable.
