Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check
Picking an Oshawa tax preparer takes about ten minutes of checking, and most of it is questions you can ask on the phone. Is the person certified to file electronically with the CRA? Will you get a copy of the return? Who answers if the CRA writes back in a year?
Firms with a storefront, Liberty Tax among them, give you the same rights and duties as a one-person office. We can’t verify fees, offers or service claims for any Oshawa business, so use this to judge one for yourself, since there is no ranking here.
What should an Oshawa tax preparer be able to show you?
The CRA keeps a directory of preparers who are certified to file returns electronically. Look the office up there before you book, and ask for the name of the person who’ll actually sign off your file, and skip the brand on the door.
Then ask three plain things. What does it cost for my kind of return, in writing? Do you charge by the form, by the hour or by the refund? And will you give me a full copy afterward? The CRA says to ask questions if you don’t understand your return, and to get that copy for your records. A firm that dodges any of these has answered you already.
Should the fee depend on your refund?
Be careful with it. A fee that grows with the refund gives the preparer a reason to find a bigger one. The CRA tells people to stay away from anyone offering false claims for donations, child care or business expenses, and to treat unusually large refunds as a sign of questionable practice. It says nothing that lets a preparer off the hook, either, because the return is yours and you answer for it.
Test the promise with your own pay. Say you’re in Oshawa and earn $50,000 on a T4, with $6,800 withheld. The tax refund calculator gives income tax of $6,273.31 for Ontario and a refund of $526.69. A quote of $3,000 on that pay should come with a reason you can point to on a slip or a receipt.
What do you hand over, and what do you sign?
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Tax slips (T4, T5, T4A and others) | The CRA already has copies, so mismatches get flagged |
| Receipts for claims | Keep them at least six years |
| Last notice of assessment | Helps with carry-forward amounts and access |
| Form T183, Part F | Authorizes electronic filing on your behalf |
Read the T183 and the return side by side before you sign. If a total looks off, it’s cheaper to fix it in the office than after a notice of assessment, which the CRA says usually arrives within about two weeks of an electronic filing.
Access to your CRA account is a separate step. Your preparer asks through Represent a Client, and you confirm in your own account. Since July 15, 2025 they can’t ask through EFILE for individuals. Never give out your CRA sign-in details.
When is a paid preparer worth it?
Not always. If your tax picture is one T4 and an RRSP slip, your own effort with the income tax calculator shows roughly what to expect, and software will file it. What changes the answer is self-employment, rental income, selling shares or a first year in Canada. The self-employed tax calculator gives an idea of how much income tax and contributions a business owner is looking at before the meeting.
Income is modest and the return is plain? A free CRA volunteer clinic may cover you at no charge. The CRA lists suggested income limits on its clinic page, but they differ between pages we read, and organizations can adjust them, so check the current numbers with the clinic itself. The CRA’s free tax clinics page says volunteers complete returns for people with a modest income and a simple tax situation.
How do you tell a good first meeting from a bad one?
A good one is a little boring. The person asks what changed in your year, whether you moved, had a baby, started a side gig or sold anything. They tell you what they’ll need and roughly what it’ll cost, and they don’t pressure you to sign on the spot. A bad one skips the questions and goes straight to the refund number. If you leave the first visit not knowing what you were quoted, that’s worth noticing. Walking out and calling the next place on your list costs you nothing, and there are plenty of options along Simcoe Street and beyond. Our guide to choosing a tax preparer has a longer set of questions to take with you.
Where the numbers come from
Tax figures come from our calculators, built on 2026 federal and Ontario data from the Canada Revenue Agency and the Ontario government. The advice on preparers, the T183, records and access comes from Canada.ca pages on using a professional tax preparer and on getting ready for tax season. We have no tie to the CRA, the government or any firm named here.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check that an Oshawa tax preparer is certified?
Use the CRA's directory of preparers certified to file electronically. Ask for the name of the person who signs off your return.
Should I pay a fee based on my refund?
Be careful. That structure rewards a bigger refund, and the CRA warns against false claims and unusually large refunds.
What is Form T183?
The declaration and authorization you sign in Part F so your preparer can file electronically. Read it next to the return first.
Who is responsible if the return has an error?
You are. The CRA says you answer for the information on the return even when someone else prepared it.
Is there free help in Ontario?
The CRA runs a free tax clinic program for modest income and simple returns. Check the clinic directory for the current income guidelines.
