Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check
If you’re looking for a tax preparer in Brampton, Ontario, the one fact worth checking first is whether the person is certified to file your return through the CRA’s EFILE service. The CRA keeps a directory of such preparers, and you can look up a firm there before you book anything. We assumed you meant a storefront chain such as H&R Block, and we make no claims about it or any other named business, including hours, prices or wait times.
How do I pick a tax preparer in Brampton?
Skip the search for a “best” one. We couldn’t verify fees, offers or rankings for any local firm, and nobody else’s list should be trusted on that either. Pick on things you can check in an afternoon.
Look the firm up in the CRA’s EFILE directory. Ask what they charge for a return like yours and get the number before they start. Ask who prepares it and who signs. And ask what they’ll do if the CRA sends a question next spring, because some offices treat that as a separate paid job.
What does the CRA say about using one?
| Topic | What the CRA says |
|---|---|
| Who can prepare | A firm, an organization, a discounter or another certified individual |
| Filing on your behalf | You sign Part F of Form T183 to authorize e-filing |
| Keeping papers | Keep slips, receipts and the signed T183 for at least 6 years |
| Refund timing | Notice of assessment and refund are usually processed within 2 weeks |
| Discounters | They work out your expected refund and pay you one amount up front before filing |
Should I sign the e-file form without reading it?
No. Signing it is what lets the preparer send your return to the CRA, so read the figures first. Ask for a copy of the return with the T183 and keep both. If a number looks wrong, it’s your name on the return, so speak before it goes out, not after.
The CRA also says to keep the slips and receipts you gave them. Get your original papers back if they took any, and don’t leave the only copy of a slip in someone’s office.
What is a discounter, and is it worth it?
A discounter pays you your expected refund up front and then files. The CRA describes the arrangement plainly on its page, so you know it exists. What it doesn’t tell you is the cost, and we couldn’t confirm what anyone charges. Before you take an advance, ask for the fee in dollars and work out what share of your refund it is. For a quick refund estimate of your own, the tax refund calculator takes your income and the tax already withheld.
Can I get my return done for free?
For some people, yes. The CRA runs a community volunteer program with free clinics. The income limits differ between CRA pages, so we’re not printing a dollar figure. Look at the current CRA page, and if you fit, you may not need a paid preparer at all.
Simple returns are common. If you have one employer and a few slips, a free clinic or your own software can be quicker than a booked appointment. Self-employment, rental income and foreign income make a return harder, and that’s when paying someone starts to make sense. The self-employed tax calculator and the rental income tax calculator give a rough idea of the tax on those before you go in.
What to bring to the appointment
Your slips (T4, T5 and the rest), last year’s notice of assessment, receipts for anything you’ll claim, and your social insurance number. Bring the RRSP receipts and the childcare receipts, too, if they apply. If you want the preparer to look at your CRA account, the CRA says to talk to them early about how they’ll get authorized. The income tax calculator gives you a sanity check on what the total should be roughly.
A preparer who asks nothing and just wants the slips is a preparer to worry about.
Where the information comes from
The preparer rules come from the Canada Revenue Agency’s pages on using a professional tax preparer and on giving your preparer access to your account. The calculators use 2026 federal and Ontario data. This website has no connection with the CRA, any tax preparation company or any other body.
