How to Choose a Tax Preparer in Winnipeg

Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check

Looking for a tax preparer in Winnipeg? Start with the CRA’s EFILE directory, which lets you search by postal code or business name and confirms a business is certified to file electronically. We assumed you meant a tax office in Winnipeg, perhaps H&R Block, and we can’t speak for any firm’s prices, hours or offers. This page covers how to pick one and check the work.

What should you check before you hire anyone?

Three checks. First, is the business on the CRA’s EFILE list? Second, how will they get access to your CRA information? Since July 15, 2025, preparers can’t request authorization for individual clients through EFILE, so it goes through Represent a Client, and the CRA suggests you ask about it early.

Third, ask the fee in writing before any work starts. We couldn’t verify what any Winnipeg preparer charges, so we give no figures.

What’s a discounter? The CRA describes one as a preparer that works out your expected refund and gives you a single up-front payment before your return is filed. Go through the contract line by line, because you’re swapping your refund for cash today.

Can you file for free in Winnipeg?

Possibly. The CRA’s free tax clinics, hosted by community groups under the CRA’s volunteer program (CVITP), are meant for people with lower incomes and uncomplicated returns. The CRA pages we found disagree on the income limits, so we’ve left dollar amounts out. Use the CRA’s clinic search to see who’s near you and what they accept.

If your return is simple and you’re comfortable online, tax software can do it too. A quick run through the tax refund calculator shows what you should expect.

How can you test a preparer’s number?

Run your own estimate. Take a Manitoba employee with $55,000 of employment income. Our income tax calculator gives $8,586.03 of federal and Manitoba tax, with $3,960.75 more going to CPP and EI. If the T4 shows $9,400 of tax withheld, the refund estimate is $813.97.

Your real figure will differ, because credits and deductions you claim aren’t in that estimate. But if a preparer’s answer lands far from yours, ask why. For the value of a deduction such as an RRSP contribution, try the tax credits calculator (federal amounts only).

What do Manitoba’s rates look like?

Manitoba income tax band 2026 rate
First band 10.8%
Middle band 12.75%
Top band 17.4%

We’re giving rates only. Two CRA pages disagree on where the bands start, so a preparer or the CRA’s payroll tables are the place for exact thresholds. Federal tax comes on top.

What are the dates to plan around?

For the 2025 return, most people must file and pay by April 30, 2026. A self-employed person, or anyone whose partner is, gets until June 15, 2026 to file, but the balance owing has to be paid by April 30. We couldn’t find 2026 dates published yet.

Read the return and Form T183 before you sign it. T183 is what lets the preparer send it in electronically. The CRA says the notice of assessment should arrive about two weeks after, and you should keep your papers six years or more.

Where do people go wrong with a preparer?

Signing before reading. That’s the worst one, because your name is on the return whatever the preparer typed.

Handing over slips late comes next, since a preparer can only work with what you bring, and a missing T5 or a forgotten receipt turns into a smaller refund later. Taking an advance from a discounter without asking what it costs you is the third.

Working for yourself? Both halves of CPP are yours to pay, and the self-employed tax calculator shows how big that gets.

Where the numbers come from

The preparer, EFILE and filing steps come from Canada Revenue Agency pages on using a professional tax preparer, free tax clinics and 2025 filing dates. Manitoba rates come from the CRA’s 2026 payroll tables, and the tax figures come from our calculators.
