Finding a Tax Preparer Near You, and What to Ask

Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check

Tax prep near me: there are three places to look, and only one of them is a search engine. Start with the CRA’s own tax preparer directory, which lists preparers certified to file returns through the CRA’s EFILE service. If your income is modest and your return is simple, try a free volunteer clinic first.

Where do you find a tax preparer near you?

The CRA directory searches by postal code. Its page says the preparers in it are certified to file your return through EFILE, which is a good starting filter. We can’t tell you who is any good, what they charge or who takes new clients, because none of that is published anywhere we could check. So call two or three and ask.

A map result or an ad for “cheap tax prep” tells you where an office is, and nothing about whether the person who’ll prepare your return is certified, so look them up in the directory before you hand over a single paper. Ten seconds. Do it.

Can you get your taxes done free?

Sometimes, yes. The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program runs free clinics where volunteers complete returns for people with a modest income and a simple tax situation. The CRA has a tool to find one by location and clinic type. Quebec has its own program with a different name.

We couldn’t confirm an official income cut-off on the CRA page, and each host organization may set its own. Phone first. Ask what they can and can’t file, since a return with business income or a property sale is often outside a clinic’s scope.

What should you ask before you hire someone?

  • Are you certified by the CRA to file electronically, and can I find you in the directory?
  • What’s the fee, and is it fixed or based on the forms involved? Get it before you start.
  • Will you give me a copy of the full return, with every line?
  • Who do I call if the CRA sends a letter next year?

Never sign a blank form. The CRA says you sign a declaration on Form T183 that authorizes the preparer to send your return electronically. Read the numbers first.

What should you bring?

Less than you’d think.

The CRA lists three things: your tax slips, receipts for the credits and deductions you want to claim, and any other papers that support the return. In practice that’s T4s, T5s, RRSP receipts, tuition forms, donation receipts and last year’s notice of assessment. Bring the rental or business figures too if you have any.

The CRA also changed how preparers get access to a client’s account in 2025. Expect to approve them online through your own CRA account, which means you should have that account set up before the appointment.

When is a preparer worth it?

For one T4 and a few receipts, tax software or a clinic is enough. The picture changes if you’re self-employed, you rent out property or you sold something at a gain. Our self-employed tax calculator, the rental income tax calculator and the capital gains tax calculator show how much is at stake in each case. A fee that looks high next to a $300 refund looks small next to a $5,000 mistake.

Before the meeting, run your own figure with the tax refund calculator. If the preparer’s number is far off yours, ask why.

Where the numbers come from

The directory, EFILE, T183 and the list of documents come from the CRA’s page on using a professional tax preparer. Clinic details are from the CRA’s free tax clinics page. Filing dates for the 2025 return (30 April 2026, and 15 June for the self-employed) are from the CRA’s due dates page. We didn’t check fees or the quality of any firm.
