Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check
If you’re looking for a tax preparer in Ottawa, start with one question: can this person file your return by EFILE and walk you through every line on it? The CRA keeps a directory of preparers certified to file electronically, and plenty of Ottawa residents with a simple return can do it free at a community clinic. A paid office is only worth it when it earns its fee.
How do you pick a tax preparer in Ottawa?
Chain offices and independent accountants all work under the same CRA rules, so the name on the door matters less than the answers you get. If you searched for a brand such as Liberty Tax, treat it as one option among many and run the same checks on it. Prices, offers and service claims from any single firm are outside what we could confirm, so this page leaves them out.
Ask these before you hand over a single slip.
| Ask | What a good answer looks like |
|---|---|
| Do you file by EFILE? | Yes, and they can show they’re listed as certified |
| What’s the total fee, in writing? | A figure for your return type, before work starts |
| Do I get a copy of the return? | Yes, plus Form T183 to sign |
| Where does my refund go? | To your own bank account |
| Can you handle my situation? | A clear yes or no for rental income, self-employment or foreign income |
Take Priya, who works for a federal department downtown and has one T4 and an RRSP slip. She’d get the same result from a volunteer or from certified software as from a storefront, so at tax time she shouldn’t pay for a bigger office. Her neighbour Marc drives for a delivery app and rents out a basement suite. His return has real moving parts, and a preparer who handles self-employment and rental income is a few bucks well spent for him.
Where can you get free tax help?
The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program runs free tax clinics where volunteers file returns for people with a modest income and a simple tax situation. The CRA defines modest as under $35,000 for a single person and under $45,000 for a couple, though a host organization can change those limits for its own clinic. Check the CRA’s clinic finder for Ottawa sites and their hours, since they change each year and we can’t list them.
If you’re over the limit or your return isn’t simple, a paid preparer becomes reasonable. Self-employed people and landlords often fall in that group.
What does a preparer really change?
Not your rate. A preparer finds deductions and credits you might miss, and gets the slips onto the right lines. Take an Ontario employee on $60,000 with $9,000 of income tax withheld. Our tax refund calculator shows income tax of $8,320.50 and a refund of $679.50. Add a $3,000 RRSP deduction and the tax drops to $7,566.72, so the refund becomes $1,433.28.
That $753.78 difference came from a deduction you can claim yourself. Check what a contribution does before you pay anyone to find it, using the RRSP calculator. The tax credits calculator lists the federal credits it models, which is a handy list to bring to any appointment.
What stays your responsibility?
Everything on the return. You sign Part F of Form T183, the declaration and authorization, and by signing you say the information is complete and correct. So read the return before you sign, and check that your name, social insurance number and bank details are right.
Keep your slips, receipts and the completed T183 for at least six years. The CRA also asks you to update your own CRA information (address, direct deposit) ahead of filing and to give it time to process changes. Preparers now get access to your account through the Represent a Client service, so expect to authorize them there rather than in the software.
What if the preparer files and you disagree later?
You can still fix it. If you spot a missed slip or a wrong amount after filing, ask for the return to be amended, and ask up front whether the office charges for that. A good preparer will tell you the answer before you sign anything, not after.
Don’t wait for the CRA to find the mistake. A missing T4 or T5 is easy for it to catch, because it already holds its own copy.
Mistakes to avoid
Don’t sign a blank or partly finished form. Don’t accept a refund sent to the preparer’s account. And be careful with refund advances: the CRA notes that discounters pay part of a refund up front, but what any of them charge is unconfirmed, so get the cost in dollars and compare it with waiting. The CRA says most refunds and notices of assessment arrive within about two weeks of an electronic filing, which puts the advance in perspective.
Finally, don’t file late because you’re waiting for an appointment. A balance owing is due April 30, and interest starts after that. The marginal tax rate calculator is a quick way to see the rate on extra income before you decide if a small deduction is worth the chase.
Our sources
The advice on preparers, T183 and record keeping comes from the Canada Revenue Agency‘s page on using a professional tax preparer, and the clinic income limits from its free tax clinics page, both read in 2026. Tax figures are results from our calculators for 2026. No fee level, discount or promise from a specific firm was verified. This site isn’t connected to the CRA or any government.
