Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check
A Nanaimo tax preparer should be certified for EFILE, quote a fee before starting and let you read the return before it goes to the CRA. On $85,000 of employment income, a British Columbia resident pays $14,627.12 in federal and provincial income tax for 2026, so a return is worth doing carefully.
How do I check a Nanaimo tax preparer is legitimate?
Start with the CRA’s tax preparer directory. It lists preparers “certified to file your tax return for you using the CRA EFILE service.” We couldn’t confirm which Nanaimo offices are listed at the moment, so search the directory yourself and don’t rely on a website’s say-so.
The CRA says a preparer can be a firm, an organization, a discounter or another certified individual. Name-brand chains, such as H&R Block, sit in that group alongside small local practices, and none of them gets a pass. Certification is the test that counts, so check it every time.
It says nothing about skill, though. So ask a few plain questions before you hand anything over. What will it cost, in writing? Who actually prepares the return? Will you see it before it’s sent? A decent preparer answers all three without fuss.
What should I bring to the appointment?
Gather everything before you book. The CRA’s own list is short.
| Bring | Examples |
|---|---|
| Tax slips | T4 from each employer, T5 for interest or dividends |
| Receipts for claims | Donations, medical costs, tuition |
| Other support | Anything else that backs up a figure on the return |
| Last year’s assessment | Helps a preparer spot changes |
Miss one slip and the return may be reassessed later, which means a letter, a delay and possibly a bill, so ask the preparer to list whatever is still outstanding before they file.
Simple as that.
What does one deduction change in BC?
A lot more than most people expect. Using the income tax calculator, an $85,000 earner in BC pays $14,627.12 in income tax, with $5,769.52 more going to CPP and EI. Add a $5,000 deduction, and the tax drops to $13,217.12.
That’s $1,410.00 saved, or about $282 for every $1,000 deducted at that income. It’s a good question for any preparer: which deductions did you consider, and why did you skip the others?

Is there free tax help nearby?
The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program hosts free clinics for people with modest income and simple returns. The CRA runs a clinic locator, so search by your location and clinic type. We couldn’t confirm the income limit from the page we read, and we can’t say what’s running in Nanaimo this year. If your return is one T4 and a tuition slip, a clinic can save you a few bucks and an afternoon.
What mistakes cost people money?
Signing without reading is the big one. You review your prepared return and the T183 form, and you’re the one who signs the declaration.
The information completed on Form T183 must be the same as the information in your electronic return.

So compare each income figure against your slips. Refund advances deserve care as well. A discounter may give you money now and keep part of the refund, so ask what it costs. We couldn’t confirm what any local firm charges.
Keep your slips, receipts and T183 for at least six years. If you’d like a rough refund figure before you go, the tax refund calculator works from your income and tax withheld, though it counts only basic credits.
When should I book?
Earlier than you think. Most people file and pay by April 30, and a return sent in on time protects benefit payments such as the GST/HST credit and the Canada child benefit. If you’re self-employed, your filing date is June 15, but a balance owing is still due April 30. Book in February or early March and you won’t be fighting the late-April rush.
Since 15 July 2025, preparers can no longer ask for access to an individual’s account through EFILE. They use the Represent a Client service, so expect a request to approve it, or add them yourself in your CRA account. The CRA’s own tax tip on giving your preparer access suggests talking to your preparer early about how they’ll get authorized.
How we checked the figures
Guidance on preparers, clinics and record keeping comes from Canada Revenue Agency pages read on 30 September 2026. Income tax figures use 2026 federal and British Columbia rates in our calculators. This site doesn’t rank any firm and has no link with the CRA or any tax company.
