Tax Companies Near Me: How to Pick a Local Preparer

Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check

Searching for tax companies near me usually means one thing: you want a person or a firm in your area to prepare a return. We’ve assumed that, and not a payment or debt company. We can’t rate any local firm or quote a fee, so this page covers how to check one before you hand over your papers.

Start with the CRA’s own directory

The CRA keeps a directory of tax preparers certified to file returns electronically through its EFILE service. Certification says the preparer is set up to send returns. It says nothing about skill or price, so treat it as a starting filter. You can also ask a preparer directly if they file electronically, and get a copy of everything they submit.

Do you need a firm at all?

Often not. A single T4 job, a few receipts and an RRSP slip is a return you can do in software in under an hour. Here’s a rough guide to when a local preparer earns the fee.

Your situation Likely fit
One job, simple slips Software or a free clinic
Modest income, simple return A CRA volunteer tax clinic
Self-employment income A preparer, or software if you’re comfortable
Rental property, foreign income, sale of a home or shares A preparer with experience in that area
A corporation An accountant who files T2 returns

The CRA runs a program of free tax clinics run by volunteers. Income limits differ between CRA pages, so we’ve left them out. Read the current page and check yours.

Questions to ask before you hire

You aren’t being rude by asking, and a preparer who bristles at plain questions about price, process and who signs the return has just told you something useful. Ask whether they file through EFILE, how they price the work and when the price is fixed, who actually prepares the return, and if you get a full copy. Ask what happens if the CRA has questions after you file. A good preparer answers without fuss.

The CRA gives short advice of its own. Ask questions when you don’t understand your return. Get a copy. Never sign a blank form. And be wary of anyone who offers unusually large refunds or false claims such as made-up donations. Those are the warning signs the CRA names.

What about discounters?

A discounter calculates your expected refund and gives you one payment before filing. The CRA has a separate page on them. We haven’t checked what any discounter charges, and a fee taken from your own refund is a real cost. Compare it with how quickly you’d get the refund anyway.

Know your number first

Do this before the first meeting. On $60,000 of employment income in Ontario, our income tax calculator shows $8,320.50 of income tax, and the refund calculator gives a $679.50 refund if $9,000 was withheld. With your own figures in hand, you can tell whether a preparer’s result is in the right range.

If you work for yourself, try the self-employed tax calculator. At $80,000 of net business income in Ontario it shows $22,126.47 in income tax and CPP together, because you pay both halves of CPP. It leaves out EI and GST/HST, so a preparer will add to that picture.

Mistakes to avoid

Don’t pick on advertising alone. Don’t hand over original documents without a receipt for them. And don’t let anyone take a fee that depends on the size of your refund, without asking why. If someone tells you they can beat what you’d get anywhere else, ask them to show how. We couldn’t confirm any claim like that for any firm.

Where the numbers come from

Advice on preparers, discounters and clinics comes from CRA pages on those topics. Tax figures come from our calculators, using 2026 federal and Ontario rates. We name no local firm, price or rating, and we aren’t connected to the CRA or any government.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a certified tax preparer near me?

The CRA keeps a directory of preparers certified for EFILE. Certification means they can send returns electronically, not that they're good or cheap.

How much does a local tax preparer cost?

We couldn't confirm typical fees, and they vary by firm and by how complex your return is. Ask for the price in writing before you start.

Is there free tax help in my area?

The CRA runs free tax clinics staffed by volunteers for people with a modest income and a simple return. Check the CRA page for the current limits.

What should I never do with a preparer?

Never sign a blank form, and ask for a copy of your return. The CRA also warns against anyone offering false claims or unusually large refunds.

Should I use a discounter?

It's an option, but it takes a fee from your own refund. We haven't checked what any discounter charges, so read the CRA page first.
