Choosing a Montreal Tax Preparer Who Fits Your Year

Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check

Finding a Montreal tax preparer comes down to a few checks, and the brand on the door matters less than you’d think. Quebec residents file two returns, one federal and one with Revenu Québec, so start by asking who will prepare both and file them electronically.

What does a Montreal tax preparer actually do?

They collect your slips, complete the federal return and the provincial return (the TP-1), and send them in. Large chains such as H&R Block, independent accountants and one-person offices all offer that. We’re naming one chain only as an example, and we haven’t checked what any particular office charges or what it promises.

For most employees with a simple year, the work takes an hour. The value shows up when your year isn’t simple: self-employment, rental income, a move between provinces, or a death in the family.

Think of Camille, a nurse in Villeray with one employer, a union dues receipt and a few donations. Her return is quick, and almost any competent preparer or decent software will get it right. Her brother, who left Toronto in March, freelanced half the year and rents out a duplex unit, has a different file. He should be asking harder questions before he hands anything over.

When are Quebec returns due?

Revenu Québec sets April 30 as the deadline for a personal return. If you or your spouse ran a business, you have until June 15 to file. Ask your preparer about the payment date too. We didn’t confirm Revenu Québec’s payment deadline for this page, and it isn’t always the same as the filing date.

Book early. A preparer who says yes in late April may be working from a pile of returns and a deadline, and tax time is when mistakes creep in. If your slips (the Quebec ones are called relevés) arrive in February, there’s no reason to wait until the last week.

Questions to ask before you hand over your slips

Ask Why it matters
Do you file both returns? Quebec residents need the federal and the provincial one
Will you file electronically? The CRA says preparers filing more than 10 returns must do so
What’s the full fee, and is it fixed? Fee levels vary and we couldn’t confirm any figure
Are you tied to a refund advance? A discounter pays you up front against your expected refund
Will you sign the return? A preparer who won’t put a name on it is a warning sign

The last row is our own rule of thumb, not an official test. Hand over your documents only to someone you’d be comfortable naming later.

What could a return look like?

Try the numbers before you go, so you can tell if the preparer’s total looks sensible. Our income tax calculator puts the tax on $60,000 of employment income in Quebec at $9,509.42, of which $4,427.35 is federal and $5,082.07 is Quebec. The same pay in Ontario comes to $8,320.50. The calculator counts only the basic amounts and the CPP or QPP and EI credits, and a few Quebec details are still marked for review, so it’s a sanity check and nothing more.

Your slips will show what was withheld. Subtract the tax figure and you have a refund or a balance. The tax refund calculator does that step for you. If you sell to Quebec customers, the GST and QST calculator shows the tax on an invoice, and the self-employed tax calculator helps you plan for the return that follows.

If the preparer’s total lands within a couple of hundred dollars of your own estimate, that’s normal, because they’ll find credits the calculator doesn’t model. If it’s off by thousands, ask them to walk you through the difference line by line.

Can you get it done for free?

Sometimes. In Quebec, community organizations run the Income Tax Assistance Volunteer Program, run jointly by the CRA and Revenu Québec. Volunteers prepare returns for people with a modest income and a simple tax situation. The organizations take no payment for the federal return, and may charge a small fee for the Quebec one within Revenu Québec’s guidelines. We didn’t confirm the income limits, so check them with the clinic. The CRA’s free tax clinics page names that Quebec program next to the national one.

Free tax software is another option if you’re comfortable with a screen and a few boxes. It’s a fair choice for a single T4 return.

Mistakes to avoid

Never sign a blank return, and don’t let anyone put a refund into an account that isn’t yours. Read the total before it goes in. Keep a copy of what was filed, along with your receipts, for six years.

Don’t assume a bigger name means fewer errors. Ask, compare two quotes and pick the person who explains things in plain words. If the first answer you get to “why is my total this number?” is a shrug, keep looking.

Where the numbers come from

Quebec deadlines and volunteer program details come from Revenu Québec and the Canada Revenue Agency, and the preparer rules from the CRA’s page on using a tax preparer, all read in September 2026. This site has no connection with any government body or tax firm.
