A $200 item in Quebec costs $229.95 once the 5% GST and the 9.975% QST are added: $10.00 of GST and $19.95 of QST. Enter a price, say whether tax is already in it, and this GST QST calculator shows both amounts.
What are TPS and TVQ?
Quebec receipts usually print the French names. TPS, for taxe sur les produits et services, is the federal tax, and TVQ, for taxe de vente du Quebec, is the provincial one. They’re the same GST and QST used on this page. If a Montreal store prints “TPS 5%” and “TVQ 9.975%”, you’re looking at exactly the two lines above.
Quebec rates and totals
| Price before tax | GST (TPS) 5% | QST (TVQ) 9.975% | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| $100 | $5.00 | $9.98 | $114.98 |
| $200 | $10.00 | $19.95 | $229.95 |
| $1,000 | $50.00 | $99.75 | $1,149.75 |
Is the QST charged on the price plus GST?
No. The calculator works out the QST on the price before GST, and the note under the result says so. Plenty of shoppers assume the second tax lands on the price plus the first. If it did, the QST on $100 would be $10.47. Here it’s $9.98, and the combined rate of 14.975% is a plain sum of the two.
Since both taxes share the same base, taking them out is one division. Divide the total by 1.14975 and you have the price before tax.
How do I pull the tax out of a bill?
Say a Quebec invoice reads $1,000 with tax included. Choose “already includes TPS and TVQ” and the price before tax is $869.75. Inside the total sit $43.49 of GST and $86.76 of QST, so the tax comes to $130.25. Try $1,149.75 as well and you get a clean $1,000 back, with $50.00 of GST and $99.75 of QST.
Your till may show a figure a cent away from ours. A store rounds each line, while this page rounds once on the total.
What isn’t taxed in Quebec?
The calculator taxes the whole amount, but Quebec doesn’t. According to the note in the calculator, basic groceries, most medical services and some other items carry no tax. If a bill mixes taxable and untaxed lines, split it first and run only the taxable part through.
Buying outside the province? Use the GST and HST calculator. And if you’re holding a total with tax already inside, the reverse HST calculator covers every province in one place.
Anyone selling across provinces can compare Quebec with the western setup on the GST and PST calculator, where the provincial tax is 6% or 7%.
Who ends up on this page?
Online shoppers who buy from a Quebec seller, freelancers invoicing a Montreal client and students pricing a used laptop all land on the same question: how much of the total is tax? A business that tracks the two taxes separately needs the split too.
Where the rates come from
The 5% GST comes from the federal rate table. The 9.975% QST is the figure the calculator uses, but we couldn’t read the Revenu Quebec page when we last checked the rate, so confirm it before you lean on it for a large purchase. This website has no connection with any government.
