Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check
To find a tax preparer in Brantford, start with the CRA’s own tax preparer directory, which lists certified EFILE service providers by area, and check a free clinic first if your return is simple. I assumed you mean Brantford, Ontario. I couldn’t confirm which offices there are open, or what any of them charge, so no firm’s prices or services appear on this page.
How do you find a tax preparer in Brantford?
Search the CRA directory for Brantford, not a search box that mixes ads with listings. The CRA describes a tax preparer as a firm, an organization, a discounter or another certified individual, and the directory is where you find the ones certified for EFILE.
A brand name in your query, such as H&R Block, tells you a chain exists. It doesn’t tell you who will sit across from you, or what they’ll charge. Call two or three places and ask the same questions each time.
Good questions are short. Who actually prepares the return? What does a return like mine cost, in dollars, before you start? Do you file electronically? What happens if the CRA writes to me next year? A straight answer to all four is a decent sign.
Is there free help in Brantford for a simple return?
Probably, but check. The CRA runs a clinic search tool where you enter a location and a clinic type. Free clinics are run through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, for people with a modest income and a simple tax situation. Some clinics may offer virtual or phone help, and the search results should show which ones do.
The income limits aren’t repeated here because CRA pages don’t all agree on them. The eligibility page has the current version.

Which return is worth paying someone for?
The ones with moving parts. If you’re an employee with a single T4 and no other income, you may not need anybody at all, since software or a clinic handles that kind of return without trouble. Business income changes the picture.
Take $80,000 of net business income in Ontario. Our self-employed tax calculator shows $13,233.57 of income tax and $8,892.90 of CPP, for $22,126 in total. That’s about 27.7% of the income gone. The tool leaves out EI, GST/HST and business expenses, and it says instalments may apply. A preparer who knows which expenses stick is doing real work there. You can also see how instalments might fall in the tax instalments calculator.
Deductions matter on a plain return too. On $60,000 of Ontario employment income, a $5,000 RRSP contribution cuts tax by $1,217 in our tax credits calculator. You’d want the return to claim it. The marginal tax rate calculator shows why higher earners save more per dollar.
One rough way to think about it: if the preparer’s fee is more than the tax they could realistically save you, and your return is simple, free software or a clinic is the better deal. The RRSP example above saves $1,217, which is real money. A few missed receipts on a one-slip return usually aren’t.
What should you bring to the appointment?
Everything, on paper or on your phone. That means every T4, T5 and other slip, last year’s notice of assessment, receipts for anything you plan to claim, and your direct deposit details. If you have a spouse, bring their income too, since some credits depend on both.
Arriving with a folder saves you time and, if you’re paying by the hour, a few bucks. It also cuts the chance of a missing slip, which is the usual reason a return needs fixing later.
How does a preparer get into your CRA account?
You approve them. Since July 15, 2025, preparers can no longer ask for access to an individual client’s account through EFILE software. Every request for an individual goes through the CRA’s Represent a Client service. In your CRA account, you either add your preparer as a representative or confirm the request they send.
There’s also an alternative route. You give them details from a notice of assessment that you received at least six months ago, and they use that to request authorization securely. The CRA says the old five day wait is gone, so access can be instant.
Ask the preparer which route they use. If someone wants your CRA sign-in password itself, walk away.
Mistakes to avoid at the counter
Don’t sign Form T183 until you’ve read the return it belongs to. The T183 must match the electronic return. You keep your copy, plus slips and receipts, for at least 6 years.
Check that your direct deposit details are current with the CRA, so a refund lands in your own account. If a discounter offers to advance your refund, ask for the exact total in dollars first.
And get the price in writing before your papers change hands. A friendly desk in April is a poor time to learn what a return with rental income costs. Tax time gets busy, so booking in March beats showing up the week of the deadline.
What this page is based on
The directory, clinic, authorization and record-keeping points come from Canada Revenue Agency pages, read in September 2026. The dollar figures come from our calculators, which use the 2026 federal and Ontario tax data and CPP figures. I did not verify any local business, so none is named as a recommendation, and this site isn’t connected to the CRA.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find a certified tax preparer near Brantford?
The CRA has a tax preparer directory that lists certified EFILE service providers by area.
Are there free tax clinics in Brantford?
Use the CRA free tax clinic search and enter your location. We could not confirm which clinics run there in a given year.
How do I let my preparer see my CRA account?
Add them as a representative or confirm their request through Represent a Client. EFILE software can no longer be used for this for individuals.
What is Form T183?
It authorizes your preparer to send your return electronically. Its details must match the electronic return, and you should keep a copy for at least 6 years.
Should I name a chain office when I search?
You can, but a brand name says nothing about who prepares your return or what it costs. Ask each office the same questions.
