Why does the answer change by province?

Federal tax, CPP and EI work the same way everywhere, except in Quebec, which has its own pension plan (QPP) and parental insurance and gives residents a federal tax reduction. Each province then adds its own tax brackets and credits. The territories, British Columbia and Alberta tend to leave more in your pocket at most incomes, while the Atlantic provinces and Quebec take more. See the brackets for every province for the rates behind this.
