Where Are Taxes Lowest in Canada? Compare Every Province

On a $75,000 salary you keep about $58,819 in Nunavut and about $53,423 in Nova Scotia, a gap of $5,396 a year for the same pay. Type your own pay below and see how much you would keep in every province and territory, ranked from best to worst.

Why does the answer change from place to place?

Federal tax, CPP and EI follow the same rules almost everywhere. What changes is the provincial income tax: each province sets its own brackets, rates and credits. Quebec also runs its own pension plan and parental insurance, and gives residents a federal tax reduction. The territories and Alberta tend to leave more in your pocket, while the Atlantic provinces and Quebec take more. The brackets for every province show the rates behind the table.

What is not in the comparison?

Only income tax, CPP or QPP and EI. Sales tax, property tax, rent, car insurance and the price of groceries are all different from one place to the next, and they can matter more than a few hundred dollars of income tax. A province with lower income tax can still cost more to live in. The sales tax by province table covers one piece of that.

Does it matter where you work or where you live?

For income tax, the province where you live on December 31 sets the provincial tax for the whole year. Payroll withholding follows where you work, and any difference is settled on your return. See the take-home pay by province tables for fixed salaries, and the take-home pay calculator if you want an RRSP contribution or a pay period.

Where do the figures come from?

The numbers are calculated with the 2026 tables from the Canada Revenue Agency and the provinces, the same engine as our other pay calculators. Checked in October 2026. Frequently asked questions

Which province has the lowest income tax?

It depends on your pay. At $75,000 the most money is left in Nunavut, and the least in Nova Scotia. Enter your own pay in the calculator to see your ranking.

Does moving to another province change my tax right away?

Your province for the whole year is where you live on December 31. A move late in the year changes your provincial tax for that entire year.

Is income tax the only thing that differs?

No. Sales tax, property tax, rent and many other costs differ too, and they are not in this comparison.

Does the ranking change at higher pay?

Yes. The order shifts as brackets differ between provinces, so check at your own pay.
