This page lists the changes to rates, rules and calculators that matter to readers. Each entry names the source we checked. The “Updated” date on every page shows when its text or figures were last changed or re-checked.
September 2026
- Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit. The benefit that replaced the GST/HST credit from July 2026 pays up to $679 to a single person, $890 to a couple and $234 for each child under 19, in July, October, January and April, according to the Canada Revenue Agency. The calculator estimates your own amount from your income.
- Minimum wages from 1 October 2026. Ontario’s general minimum wage is $17.95 an hour and the homeworker rate is $19.70. Nova Scotia’s is $17.00.
- Alberta fuel tax. The province lists a rate of 0 cents a litre on gasoline and diesel from 1 October 2026. It is reset every quarter with the oil price.
- Manitoba tax brackets. Manitoba did not index its brackets or basic amount for 2025 and later years, so the 2026 thresholds stay at $47,000 and $100,000.
- British Columbia PST on professional services. The planned extension of PST to accounting, architectural, engineering, geoscience, security and non-residential real estate services is paused, according to the province.
- Donation credit. For 2026 the federal credit on the first $200 of donations is 14%, the lowest federal rate. Above $200 it is 29%, or 33% on the part of your income in the top federal bracket.
- Lifetime capital gains exemption. The Department of Finance lists the limit at $1.275 million for eligible small business shares and farm or fishing property. The release gives no effective date, so confirm it on the CRA site before a sale.
- Toronto land transfer tax. The city’s rates above $3 million rose from 1 April 2026. The land transfer tax calculator uses the new rates.
