Tax Software Coupon Codes: Judge the Real Cost First

Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check

There’s no real tax software coupon code on this page, and no offer, price or discount is listed. Codes go stale fast, and we can’t vouch for any of them. What this page can do is show you how to judge the real cost of filing, and point to the free options the CRA itself lists. For many people the honest answer to “what will this cost me?” is nothing.

What does the CRA say about paying to file?

The CRA certifies tax software and publishes a list of it. On that list you can see options by cost and by platform (online, computer download or mobile app). Here’s the line that matters most:

If you have a modest income, most software will prepare a basic tax return for free, otherwise there is usually a service fee.

The CRA also says free offers can depend on your situation: a modest income, a simple tax situation, the province or territory you live in, or other conditions the provider sets. That last one is the reason two people with the same income can get different bills. A brand such as TurboTax is one name you might see on the list, and nothing here says what any provider charges.

Are tax software coupon codes worth chasing?

Only if the saving beats the time you’ll spend. A code that trims a paid tier still leaves you paying, while a free tier for a simple return costs nothing to begin with. Before you search, check what you’d need to pay for at all.

Ask four things of any package. What is the total price for your return, including the province? Does the free tier cover the slips and credits you have? Is there a charge to file, to print or to get help? And when does the price go up, before or after you’ve typed in your data?

That last question trips people up at tax time. Picture Dana in Winnipeg who spends an hour entering her T4, her tuition slip and a rent receipt, then gets a pop-up asking for a few bucks to get at the form she needs. By then she’s invested the hour, so she pays. Reading the fine print first takes two minutes.

Which free options does the CRA list?

Option Who it suits What to check
Free tier in certified software Modest income, simple return The provider’s own conditions
Free tax clinic (CVITP) Modest income, simple tax situation Local income limits
Quebec ITAVP clinic Quebec residents A small provincial fee may apply

For clinics, the CRA gives suggested income thresholds by family size, from $40,000 for one person to $70,000 or more for five or more, and says local organizations can adjust them. A simple situation means things like employment income, pensions, benefits, RRSP income, scholarships and interest under $1,200. Self-employment, rental income, capital gains and foreign income put you outside it.

Bring photo ID, your Social Insurance Number, your slips, receipts, and last year’s notice of assessment if you have it. Clinics run as walk-in, drop-off or by appointment.

What does a more complicated return cost in tax?

Situation changes both the tax and the software you’ll want. Take a $60,000 employee in Ontario. The income tax calculator shows $8,320.50 of income tax and $4,339.75 of CPP and EI. Move the same $60,000 to self-employment and the self-employed tax calculator shows $7,879.42 in tax plus $6,723.50 of CPP, or $14,602.92 in all.

That gap, about $1,940 more in total, is a bigger figure than most filing fees. It also moves you out of the free clinic group.

Curious what you’ll get back? The tax refund calculator gives an idea before you choose software.

Is the free version enough for your return?

Run through a short checklist before you pick. If your income is a T4 or two, a pension slip, maybe tuition or a donation receipt, a free tier usually handles it. If you sold investments, rented out a basement, drove for a delivery app or earned income abroad, you’ll likely land on a paid tier, and that’s where comparing the full price pays off.

It also helps to keep last year’s return handy. Most certified programs can pull in your details, which saves typing and catches the carry-forward amounts people forget.

Mistakes and limits

Don’t file through a link from a coupon page unless the software is on the CRA’s certified list. Check the name against the list. And don’t pay for a version you don’t need because a discount made the top tier look cheap.

The CRA’s electronic services run from 23 February 2026 to 29 January 2027, and you can send returns for 2018 to 2025 that way. Dates for 2026 returns weren’t available when this was written, and nothing here covers Quebec’s own return.

This page is short on purpose. Without prices or offers, there’s not much honest to say about any one product.

Where the numbers come from

The wording on software, fees and free clinics comes from Canada Revenue Agency pages read on 30 September 2026. Tax figures come from the 2026 rates in our calculators. This site has no link with the CRA, any software maker or any government.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a current TurboTax coupon code for Canada?

We couldn't confirm any code or offer, so we don't list one. Check the provider's own site and the CRA's certified software list.

Is tax software free in Canada?

The CRA says that if you have a modest income, most software will prepare a basic return for free, otherwise there is usually a service fee.

Who can use a free tax clinic?

People with a modest income and a simple tax situation. The CRA suggests thresholds from $40,000 for one person to $70,000 or more for five or more, and local clinics can adjust them.

Can I use a free clinic if I'm self-employed?

The CRA lists self-employment among the situations outside a simple return, so a clinic is usually not the route.

How do I know software is allowed to file with the CRA?

It should appear on the CRA's list of certified tax software, which also shows cost and platform.
