Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check
You can file your Canadian tax return online for free, but the free part depends on the software and on you. The CRA certifies the programs and publishes the list. Some cost nothing for anyone, while others are free only if your return is simple or your income is low. If you have a modest income, a free tax clinic can also do the whole thing for you.
Before you pick anything, run your numbers through the income tax calculator so you know roughly what the answer should be.
What counts as free online tax filing in Canada?
Three things get called free, and they aren’t the same. One is certified software with no charge at all. Another is certified software that’s free for some people, with a fee for the rest. And then there’s the volunteer clinic, where someone else prepares the return.
The CRA’s certified software page sorts products into groups: listed as free, paid with optional paid services, and free only in certain situations, such as a modest income or a simple return. It also puts the homework on you, since the CRA doesn’t review developers’ privacy policies and says it’s your responsibility to research them before you use a product. An advert’s label is a claim. Eligibility rules are the fine print.
Products aren’t named or ranked here, because what they charge changes every season. A “free” tier that suits your neighbour might ask you for a few bucks the moment you add a rental slip.
How do I check that the software is allowed to file?
Use only software from the CRA’s list of certified products, because NETFILE, the CRA’s online filing service, takes returns only from those. NETFILE and ReFILE are open, says the CRA, from 23 February 2026 until 29 January 2027, for initial returns from tax years 2018 to 2025 and amended returns for 2022 to 2025.
That last part matters if you skipped a year. You can still file old returns online, and you don’t need to pay a firm to do it.
| Item | What the CRA says |
|---|---|
| NETFILE opens | 23 February 2026, 6:00 a.m. Eastern |
| NETFILE closes | 29 January 2027 |
| Initial returns accepted | Tax years 2018 to 2025 |
| Amended returns accepted | Tax years 2022 to 2025 |
Who qualifies for a free tax clinic?
The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program runs clinics where trained volunteers prepare returns at no cost. Quebec has a matching program with its own name. The CRA’s free tax clinic page gives suggested income limits that depend on the size of the household. Local organizations can adjust them.
| People in the household | Suggested income limit |
|---|---|
| 1 | $40,000 |
| 2 | $55,000 |
| 3 | $60,000 |
| 4 | $65,000 |
| 5 | $70,000 |
Above five people, add $5,000 for each extra person.
The income is only half of it. Your tax situation has to be simple. Volunteers don’t prepare returns for people with business or self-employment income, rental income, capital gains or losses, foreign property, or interest over $1,200. They also don’t file for someone who has died or gone bankrupt. Employment income, pensions, RRSP income, benefits like CPP, OAS, EI and social assistance, and scholarships are fine.
Clinics come in three forms: walk-in, drop-off, and by appointment, in person or virtual. The CRA’s clinic locator finds the ones near you. Most are busiest in March and April.
What does a free return still leave for you to do?
A lot of the work is gathering paper. Slips mostly arrive by the end of February. The CRA says to contact the issuer directly if one hasn’t come by the end of March. Check your direct deposit details too. That’s how a refund reaches you.
Free software still leaves the deadline with you. If you owe, payment is due on the same date as everyone else’s. The refund estimator gives you a rough figure to compare with the software’s answer, and it’s a fair check on a typo. Got a side business? Try the self-employed tax calculator first, because that’s the kind of return most free tiers and clinics won’t take. Our guide to filing taxes in Canada covers the dates and steps.
What should I double-check before pressing submit?
Four things catch most problems. Match every slip you received against the software’s list, so nothing is missing. Check your name, date of birth and SIN against the slips, since a typo there stalls the return. Confirm your direct deposit details. And read the summary page, because the software only knows what you typed in.
Imagine Amir in Winnipeg, who files his own return each year at tax time with one T4 and a tuition slip. He keeps a tidy folder of PDFs and ticks each slip off as he enters it. Five minutes of ticking beats a reassessment letter in June.
Where the numbers come from
The NETFILE dates and the software categories come from the CRA‘s certified tax software page. The clinic income limits, the interest limit and the list of returns volunteers won’t prepare come from the CRA’s free tax clinic page, read in October 2026. No CRA figure for 2026 returns has been published yet. No government body has reviewed or endorsed what you read here.
