Free Taxes Online in Canada: Software and Clinics

Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check

Yes, you can file free taxes online in Canada. The CRA certifies tax software every year, and its own list of 18 programs includes several that cost nothing, with a few free only if your income is modest or your return is simple. The 2025 return was due on 30 April 2026, and the CRA’s electronic filing service NETFILE stays open for 2025 returns until 29 January 2027.

Free doesn’t mean second rate. It means you have to check the small print on what the free tier covers before you type in your slips.

Which free tax software can I use?

The CRA page on certified software says some programs are free to everyone, and others are free when your income is modest, your situation is simple, or you live in certain provinces. It names Better Tax, GenuTax Standard, Wealthsimple Tax and the StudioTax mobile app as options with a no-cost route. We haven’t compared how they behave, so treat that as a starting list and not a ranking.

The same page carries a warning. The CRA doesn’t review privacy policies, and it says it can’t be held responsible if a program’s error changes what you owe. So read the policy before you upload your SIN, and don’t email personal details to a software company.

Only software on the CRA’s certified list can send a return through NETFILE. If a site you’ve never heard of isn’t there, it can’t file for you, whatever the ad says.

What if my return is too complicated for the free tier?

That’s where “free” usually ends. Software companies often keep a paid tier for things like rental income, self-employment, or a lot of investment slips. We couldn’t confirm what any particular product charges, and those terms change from year to year, so check the screen where it asks you to pick your situation.

Before you start, run your numbers through the income tax calculator. If the answer surprises you, something is missing from your slips.

Option What the CRA says
Free certified software Some free to all, some free with a modest income or simple return
NETFILE Open from 23 February 2026 to 29 January 2027 for 2025 returns
Free tax clinic Volunteers file for people with a modest income and a simple tax situation
Paid preparer Files through EFILE; you sign Form T183 first

How does a free tax clinic work?

If you’d rather have a person do it, the CRA’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Program runs free clinics where volunteers complete returns for people with a modest income and a simple tax situation. The CRA page doesn’t list the income limits or what counts as simple. Some clinic operators publish their own figures, and they’re allowed some flexibility, so call the one near you before you pack your papers.

Find a clinic through the CRA’s locator. Bring your slips and your last notice of assessment.

What does a simple return look like in numbers?

Say you earn $45,000 in Ontario from one job and your T4 shows $6,200 withheld. The tax refund calculator puts your income tax at about $5,243 for 2026 rates, which leaves a refund near $957. That’s a return any free program will handle in 20 minutes.

Add a side business or a rental, and the picture changes. The self-employed tax calculator and the rental income tax calculator show why. Those returns need more forms, and free tiers often stop there.

One more habit helps. Check which credits you may have missed with the tax credits calculator. It covers federal amounts only, so your province may add more.

Mistakes that cost people money

Filing late is the big one. Even with a refund coming, a late return can hold up benefits, and a balance owing draws penalties and interest. The 2026 return’s due date hasn’t been published yet, so we can’t give you one. Check the CRA’s page in the new year.

Others are smaller. Old direct deposit details mean a slow cheque. A missed slip gets caught later and reassessed. Not keeping your slips and receipts for at least six years, which the CRA asks you to do, leaves you without proof if it ever asks.

Last, watch for an “upgrade” prompt near the end. If you were told the return was free, ask what the upgrade adds before you pay for it.

Where the numbers come from

NETFILE dates, the software list and the warnings come from the CRA’s certified software page, read in September 2026. Clinic details come from the CRA free tax clinics page. Calculator examples use 2026 federal and Ontario rates.
