Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check
We can’t give you a working TurboTax Canada coupon code, and we won’t post one. Codes expire, prices change every season, and we couldn’t confirm any current offer from an official source. What we can do is show you how to check any deal, and tell you when you shouldn’t be paying anything, which is more often than the ads suggest, so read on before you hunt for a code.
Does a TurboTax coupon change your tax bill?
No. A certified program calculates the same tax as any other from the same slips. The software price is only what you pay for the service of filling in the forms. Take a single Ontario worker with $70,000 of employment income. The income tax calculator gives $11,133.91 of federal and Ontario tax, and that figure doesn’t move with the brand or the discount.
So the real question is whether you need to pay at all, and if you do, what you get for it.
When is filing free?
More often than people think, and for a simple return you may not need to pay a loonie. Free tax clinics run by volunteers do returns for people with a modest income and a simple situation. The CRA’s suggested limits are below, but each clinic can adjust them for its own community, so phone ahead.
| People in your household | Suggested income limit |
|---|---|
| 1 | $40,000 |
| 2 | $55,000 |
| 3 | $60,000 |
| 4 | $65,000 |
| 5 | $70,000, plus $5,000 for each extra person |
Volunteers don’t handle self-employment, rental income, capital gains, foreign income or interest above $1,200. If your return is that complicated, a paid product makes sense, and the coupon question becomes real.
Software can be free too. The CRA notes that many certified products offer free versions based on your income or situation, and a few work on a pay what you want basis. Terms change each year, so read the current offer.
How do you check a discount before you pay?
Ask the same handful of questions of any brand, coupon or not.
- Is the product on the CRA’s certified list for this tax year? Certification is renewed annually.
- What’s the final price for my return, including any provincial or extra forms, before I enter my data?
- Does my income slip, RRSP claim or rental fit the cheap tier, or will it jump me into a dearer one?
- Does the price cover filing for my spouse as well?
- Where did the code come from? If it isn’t on the company’s own site, treat it as unverified.
If the price jumps after you’ve typed in your slips, stop. Compare.
A quick example of how it goes wrong. Priya starts a return on a “$0 to start” banner, enters her T4 and her RRSP receipt, and then sees a higher tier lights up because of the RRSP claim. Nothing was hidden exactly, it just wasn’t in the banner. Reading the tier list first would have taken two minutes.
What does a refund tell you about the software?
Nothing, and beware of any ad that says otherwise. Your refund is tax already paid minus tax owed. On $60,000 of income with $8,000 withheld in Ontario, the tax refund calculator shows $8,320.50 of tax, so you’d owe $320.50, not get a refund. Withholding decides that, and no program changes it.
If you want to lower the bill, do it with real moves, like an RRSP contribution. Put $10,000 into an RRSP at $80,000 of income in Ontario and the RRSP calculator shows $3,115 less tax, so the contribution really costs $6,885. That’s a bigger lever than any discount code, and the tax credits calculator can show what else you may have missed.
Is a paid program worth it at all?
Sometimes. If you have self-employment income, rental income or a sale of shares, software that walks you through the forms can save you a mistake that costs more than the fee. If you have one T4 and a few receipts, you probably don’t need a paid tier. The test is simple: would a free version let you finish the return without leaving a box blank? If yes, paying is optional.
Mistakes to avoid with promo codes
Don’t download anything from a site that offers “guaranteed” codes, and never give your CRA login or banking details to a coupon page. Don’t pay for two programs by accident because you started with one and switched. And don’t skip a free clinic because a paid brand advertised more loudly.
Filing late costs more than any coupon saves, because interest and penalties pile up while you shop around for a better price on software.
Sources, and how we checked them
The clinic income limits and the software certification rules come from the Canada Revenue Agency, read in September 2026. Tax figures come from the 2026 federal and Ontario rates in the calculators linked above. We found no official source for any product price, discount or code, so this page makes no claim about them.
Frequently asked questions
Do you list current TurboTax coupon codes?
No. We couldn't confirm any current offer from an official source, and codes expire. Check the company's own site for what applies this year.
Does using a coupon change my refund?
No. Your refund depends on tax withheld and tax owed, not on the software or its price.
Can I file my taxes free in Canada?
Often yes. Free tax clinics serve people with a modest income and a simple return, and some certified software has free versions based on income.
How do I know software is allowed to file with the CRA?
Look for it on the CRA's list of certified tax software. Products must be certified again every year.
Is a coupon from a random website safe?
Treat it as unverified. Never enter your CRA login or banking details on a coupon page.
