Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check
A CPA accountant near you is a Chartered Professional Accountant, a title that only registered members in good standing may use in Canada. That’s the first check to make. In the United States CPA stands for something different, so a foreign badge on a website tells you little about Canadian tax work.
What does the CPA title actually tell you?
It tells you the person belongs to a provincial accounting body and answers to its rules. In Ontario and other provinces, students, former members and suspended members can’t use the designation. It doesn’t tell you they know your kind of tax problem.
The public accounting licence is a separate thing. CPA Ontario says you need one if you’re the lead person signing an audit or review report on financial statements. What other tax and bookkeeping work requires a licence isn’t something we could confirm, so ask what applies to the job you have.
Which services might you need?
Most small businesses need one of three things: tax returns, financial statements, or advice on structure. An audit or review is a different job, usually asked for by a lender or an investor. Say which one you want in your first message, since it decides who’s the right fit.
Take Dana in Winnipeg, who runs a design studio and just wants her year-end done. She needs statements and a return, not an auditor. Someone building a company to sell in five years is shopping for something else.
For a self-employed person, the self-employed tax calculator shows $22,126.47 of income tax and CPP on $80,000 of net income in Ontario. That’s a useful number to hold before you call anyone, because you can tell whether their estimate is in the right ballpark.
What does a corporation pay, roughly?
Many CPA conversations turn to incorporation. Here are two results from the corporate tax calculator for an Ontario corporation, using 2026 figures.
| Taxable income | Corporate tax | Average rate |
|---|---|---|
| $300,000 | $35,088 | 11.7% |
| $600,000 | $84,980 | 14.2% |
The federal small business rate of 9% applies to the first $500,000. Above that, the tool shows a combined rate of 26.5%. Ontario cut its small business rate on 1 July 2026, so for a calendar year the tool uses a prorated blend that isn’t a published figure. A different year end changes the answer.
These numbers also skip what the owner pays personally when money leaves the company. Use the dividend tax calculator for that part, and ask the accountant to compare both routes.
How do you check a CPA is who they say?
Look them up.
CPA Ontario keeps a public directory of members, firms and licensees, and other provinces have their own bodies. Search for your province’s CPA regulator by name, then type in the person’s name and the firm. If they don’t appear, ask them why before you send anything.
Then ask what they’d do in the first month, how they’d keep in touch with you between deadlines, and whether they’d take on CRA letters if one arrives in the middle of a busy season. If you want them to speak to the CRA for you, you authorize them through your account. Level 1 gives information only, and Level 2 also lets them request some changes.
What should you ask about fees?
Ask for the price in writing, and ask what’s in it. A flat fee for a personal return and a monthly fee for ongoing bookkeeping are different animals. Find out whether CRA letters, amended returns and late-arriving slips cost extra. Fees vary a lot between firms and cities, and we haven’t checked any, so the only number that counts is the one in your quote.
What are the common mistakes?
People choose on the letters and skip the fit.
A CPA who mostly audits may not be the best choice for a landlord with two units. The reverse is also true.
Others send documents late, then blame the fee. Or they assume a name found in a search is a member without looking. And because we don’t list firms here, no result on this page is a recommendation.
The sources behind this page
The CPA title and licence details come from CPA Ontario and the British Columbia body’s guidance, read in September 2026. Corporate rates come from the Canada Revenue Agency‘s corporation pages, with the Ontario blend derived by this site. This site isn’t connected to any government or accounting body. Confirm dates and rates on the official page before you act.
