Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check
A CPA tax accountant is a Chartered Professional Accountant who works on tax, and you can check one in a few minutes. In Ontario, CPA Ontario’s public directories list members, firms and holders of a public accounting licence. Look yours up before you pay a deposit.
What is a CPA and what does the tax work cover?
CPA stands for Chartered Professional Accountant. In Ontario the Registrar grants the designation to each member on admission, and members in good standing may use it after their names. Other provinces run their own bodies, so the rules you check depend on where the accountant is registered.
Tax work for a CPA usually means personal and corporate returns, GST/HST, payroll filings and planning. Planning is the part that pays. It’s where someone tells you, in dollars, what happens if you take a salary instead of a dividend, or wait until January to sell.
Do you need a CPA for a plain return? Probably not. We didn’t find a rule saying only a CPA may prepare a return, and plenty of employees file with software. The case for a CPA gets stronger once there’s a corporation, rental income, a sale of property or a cross-border question. Our guide on how to choose a tax preparer compares the options side by side.
How do you check that someone is a CPA?
| Directory | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Member directory | CPA Ontario members in good standing, or under a membership suspension |
| Public accounting licence directory | People entitled to practise public accounting in Ontario, plus those who held a licence in the last five years |
| Certificate of authorization directory | Professional corporations that hold, or recently held, a certificate |
| Firm directory | Firms registered with the body |
The point of the licence directory is a simple one. Someone can hold the CPA designation without being licensed to provide public accounting services, so look at the licence if you want a firm that signs audits or reviews. For tax advice alone, membership in good standing is the first thing to confirm.
Search by name and you’ll see whether someone is in good standing.
If they’re not listed, or the name on the card doesn’t match the name in the directory, ask why before anything else happens, and don’t accept a vague answer that you can’t check yourself in the same directory afterwards.
What will a CPA tax accountant show you in numbers?
Ask for comparisons, not adjectives. Here are two from our calculators, both for Ontario.
A sole proprietor with $90,000 of net income owes $16,079.97 of income tax and $9,292.90 of CPP, per the self-employed tax calculator. A corporation with $600,000 of active business income owes $84,980, or 14.2%, using the corporate tax calculator. Of that, the first $500,000 is taxed at the small business rate and the rest at the general rate, which is why the average is above the 11.7% blend.
Neither figure is your answer. The corporate number leaves out tax on money paid out to owners unless you tick the payout option, and the small business rate assumes a Canadian-controlled private corporation with a limit that isn’t shared. A CPA should be able to say what changes for you. To see how a payout is taxed, try the dividend tax calculator.
One more caveat. Ontario cut its small business rate on July 1, 2026. We prorated it by days for a calendar year and the province doesn’t publish that blend, so confirm the rate for your own year end.
What should you ask before you hire?
How many clients like me do you have? Who does the work, you or a junior? When do you want my documents? What’s in the quote, and what costs extra? These questions tell you how the firm runs.
We can’t say what CPAs charge, because we couldn’t confirm fee levels from an official source. So we won’t. Get written quotes from two or three firms and compare scope first, price second.
Also ask about dates. Self-employed people file by June 15, 2026, but owe any balance by April 30. Corporations file within six months of year end, and pay two months after, or three for many small ones. Your accountant should have these in a calendar for you.
If the accountant files your personal return electronically, the CRA’s page on using a professional tax preparer says you review the return and the T183 and sign Part F before anything is sent. Don’t skip that step because the person is a CPA.
A quick picture of when it pays off
Consider Amir, a Toronto landlord who also freelances. He sold a rental condo in the autumn, and he wasn’t sure how the gain would sit on top of his freelance profit. An hour with an accountant in November let him time a few things before December 31. The same hour in April would have only told him what had already happened.
That’s the sort of case where a CPA’s fee can earn its keep. For a plain T4 return, it usually doesn’t.
What goes wrong with CPA hiring?
People assume the letters mean a fit. A CPA who does audits all day may not be the person for a landlord with three units. Ask about the work they do most.
Another trap is waiting until April. Planning choices for the year are mostly gone by then, and the bill is a fact, not an option. Set up a meeting in the autumn instead, well before tax time, when you still have a few months to act.
Last, don’t hand over everything and stop looking. The return has your name on it. Read the summary and ask about any line you don’t understand.
Where the numbers come from
Designation and directory facts come from CPA Ontario’s public pages, read in September 2026. Filing deadlines come from the Canada Revenue Agency‘s 2026 tax deadlines page for businesses and the self-employed. Corporate and personal tax figures come from our calculators using 2026 federal and Ontario data. This is an independent site, and it recommends no accountant.

How do I verify a CPA in Ontario?
Use CPA Ontario's member, firm, public accounting licence and certificate of authorization directories.

We found no rule that says only a CPA may prepare a return. A CPA is most useful for corporations, rental income, property sales and planning.
