Do You Need a Tax Accountant Near You?

Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check

A tax accountant near you is a convenience, not a requirement. A self-employed person in Ontario with $80,000 of net income pays about $22,126 in income tax and CPP on the 2026 figures, so the question is whether a professional can save more than they cost. For a plain salary and a few slips, probably not.

When does a tax accountant pay for itself?

Look at your situation, not the postal code. Software copes with one T4 and a few receipts. Help earns its fee when income comes from several places, when you run a business, or when a notice from the CRA has landed on your mat.

We haven’t confirmed what any accountant charges, so we can’t give you a ballpark for the break-even point. Ask for a written quote and compare it with the tax you expect to save.

What does tax look like in three common cases?

These come from the site’s calculators for Ontario with 2026 rates. They show why the same income gets taxed very differently depending on how you earn it.

Case Income tax CPP and EI
Employee, $85,000 of pay $15,551.05 $5,769.52
Self-employed, $80,000 net $13,233.57 $8,892.90 (CPP only)
Corporation, $300,000 taxable income $35,088.00 corporate tax Not applicable

The self-employed figure is higher on contributions because you pay both halves of CPP. The income tax calculator covers the first row, and the self-employed tax calculator the second. The self-employed tool leaves out EI, GST/HST and business costs.

Do the sums on the first two rows. The employee’s $15,551.05 plus $5,769.52 is $21,320.57, about 25% of $85,000. The self-employed person’s $13,233.57 plus $8,892.90 is $22,126.47, about 28% of $80,000. Less income, bigger bite. That’s the gap people feel in their first year of working for themselves.

Can you pay for just an hour of advice?

Often, yes, though it depends on the person, so ask. Plenty of professionals will review one question, such as how to treat a sale or whether a home office claim holds up, without taking on your whole return. Go in with the question written down, your numbers on one page and your last notice of assessment.

It’s a fair way to test the waters. If the first hour is clear and useful, you’ve learned something about how they work. If it’s all jargon, you’ve lost a little and saved a lot.

Should you incorporate?

This is the question people expect an accountant to answer, and it’s a good use of one. The corporate tax calculator shows $35,088 of corporate tax on $300,000 in Ontario, a blended 11.7%. Be careful with that rate. Ontario cut its small business rate on 1 July 2026, and the tool prorates it for a calendar year, which is a derived figure, not a published one. A corporation with a different year end will differ.

The tool also leaves out what happens when the money leaves the company. Tax on salary or dividends paid to you is where the real comparison lives, and that’s the part to bring to a professional.

What can an accountant do for you at the CRA?

You can authorize a representative through your CRA account. On a personal account there are two levels. Level 1 lets them see information. Level 2 lets them see it and ask for certain changes, such as adjustments to income or deductions. Neither lets them change your address, marital status or direct deposit.

Choose the lower level unless you need the higher one. You can remove it later.

What goes wrong when people hire one?

Handing over a pile of papers in April and hoping is the classic. Accountants work from what you give them, so a late or messy pile costs you either time or deductions. Assuming they’ll spot a missed credit is another.

Some skip asking who signs and who takes the blame. Whoever prepares the return, you’re the one who filed it. Keep your own copy of everything you send, and read the return before it goes. The CRA says to keep your tax records for at least six years, so a tidy folder is part of the job on your side too.

How we checked the figures

Federal and Ontario tax figures use 2026 rates from the Canada Revenue Agency and the Ontario government, run through this site’s calculators. The representative access levels are from the CRA’s authorization pages as read in September 2026. We aren’t a government service and we don’t speak for one. We don’t list accountants, so check any name you find against the public directory of your provincial CPA body.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an accountant to file my taxes?

Not for simple returns. Software handles a few slips and receipts. Business income, several income sources or a CRA notice are the usual reasons to get help.

Can my accountant deal with the CRA for me?

Yes, if you authorize them. Level 1 gives them information, and Level 2 also lets them request certain changes. You set the level in your CRA account.

Does it matter if my accountant is nearby?

For a digital file, not much. Choose on experience with your type of income and a clear written scope.

How much does a tax accountant cost?

We couldn't confirm fee levels, so we don't quote any. Ask for a written quote that says what's included.

Will incorporating lower my tax?

It can defer tax inside a company, but tax on money paid out to you is not in our corporate tool. Ask an accountant to model the whole picture.
