Do You Need a Tax Preparer in Saskatoon? What to Weigh

Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check

A tax preparer in Saskatoon can file your return the same way one in any other city does, so the real question is if your return needs one at all. A Saskatchewan resident earning $60,000 pays about $9,141 in income tax for 2026, and that figure is the same whoever fills in the boxes.

Should I pay someone or file it myself?

Start with what’s on the return. A salary slip, a tuition slip and an RRSP receipt fit certified software fine, and the CRA lists 17 such products for the 2025 tax year, some free for people with modest incomes or simple returns. But if you had rental income, a business, foreign income or you sold something at a gain, a person who reads those slips every week saves you real trouble.

Picture Sam, who works at a Saskatoon warehouse, has one T4 and put a few hundred into an RRSP. Sam can do this at the kitchen table in an evening. Now picture Sam’s neighbour, who rents out a basement suite and drove for a delivery app on weekends. Same city, very different return.

You may see advertising in Saskatoon for firms and franchises, Liberty Tax among them. We have no way of confirming what any of them charge, what they offer or how they compare, so we don’t say. What we can do is tell you how to test one.

Is there a free option in Saskatoon?

Possibly. Free tax clinics run across the country for people with a modest income and a simple tax situation, and volunteers do the return at no charge. Each clinic sets its own limits, so phone before you show up with your slips. The CRA describes the program on its free tax clinics page, and a locator is there too.

What is a refund advance?

The CRA calls these preparers discounters. They work out your expected refund, pay you an amount before the return is filed, and take their fee out of the refund. The CRA says the fees are regulated. Ask for the total cost in dollars and compare it to the wait, because the CRA says a notice of assessment and refund are usually processed within about two weeks. Waiting costs nothing.

Whoever files, you sign off on the facts. The CRA is clear that you remain responsible for the information and for reading the return before you approve it.

How much tax does Saskatchewan take?

The provincial rate is 10.5% up to $54,532 of taxable income, 12.5% up to $155,805, then 14.5%. The basic personal amount is $20,381. Saskatchewan also charges a 6% provincial sales tax on top of the 5% GST. Here’s what the income tax calculator shows for salary alone.

Salary Income tax CPP and EI Left after both
$40,000 $4,455 $2,824 $32,721
$60,000 $9,141 $4,340 $46,520
$80,000 $15,409 $5,570 $59,022
$100,000 $21,943 $5,770 $72,288

The next dollar at $60,000 loses 33% to federal and provincial tax combined. A $5,000 RRSP deposit at $100,000 of salary trims the tax bill by about $1,650. The RRSP calculator shows how that deposit grows.

What can the numbers not tell me?

They skip credits you may qualify for, child benefits and anything beyond employment income. The tax credits calculator covers the federal ones only, so provincial credits are for your software or preparer to find. The sales tax rate is from the CRA’s provincial table, and we didn’t check the provincial finance page for the current wording, so confirm the 6% there if it matters to you.

Also, a calculator can’t tell you if a slip is missing. Check the list of slips against your CRA account before anyone files.

What does a Saskatoon return need, and by when?

Bring the slips, receipts, last year’s notice of assessment and your CRA login. For the 2025 return, the deadline was 30 April 2026, or 15 June 2026 if you or your spouse had a business, with any balance still due on 30 April. The dates for the 2026 return weren’t posted where we looked, so hold off on planning around one.

Keep all your tax slips, receipts, and the completed Form T183 for at least 6 years.

Working out a bonus or an overtime week first? The bonus tax calculator shows how much of it stays with you. Leave it until the last week of April, though, and you’ll be paying a few extra bucks in stress for nothing.
