Lost or missing tax slip: what to do

A missing slip is common, and it does not stop you from filing. You still have to report the income, so the job is to find the number.

What should you do first?

  1. Check your CRA account. The tax information slips area often shows a slip before the paper copy arrives.
  2. Ask the payer. Employers, banks and brokers can send a copy or put it in your online account.
  3. Use your own records. A final pay stub, a bank statement or a broker report can give you the amounts.

What if you still do not have it by the deadline?

File with your best figures and keep a note of what you did. Late slips can be fixed afterwards by asking the CRA to adjust your return. Do not leave the income out, because the CRA gets its own copy.

Which slips are most often missing?

T4 from an old job, T5 from a small interest account, T3 from a fund and T4A for side income. Our tax slips decoder explains each one, and the documents checklist helps you find what is left.
