Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check
Lethbridge tax help comes in three forms: a paid preparer, a free volunteer clinic, or software you run yourself. On $60,000 of pay, an Alberta resident owes $7,969.60 in federal and provincial income tax, about $2,964 less than the same person in Nova Scotia. Firms such as H&R Block show up in local searches, but we couldn’t confirm any branch’s fees or services.
What does Alberta change about your tax return?
Quite a bit. Alberta has no provincial sales tax and no HST, so the only sales tax is the 5% GST. A $1,000 purchase costs $1,050. The province’s income tax rates start at 8%, and the basic personal amount is $22,769 for 2026.
| Alberta taxable income | Provincial rate |
|---|---|
| Up to $61,200 | 8% |
| $61,200 to $154,259 | 10% |
| $154,259 to $185,111 | 12% |
| $185,111 to $246,813 | 13% |
| $246,813 to $370,220 | 14% |
| Over $370,220 | 15% |
How much tax do you pay on $60,000 in Lethbridge?
Put $60,000 of employment income into the income tax calculator with Alberta selected. Federal tax is $5,338.30 and Alberta tax is $2,631.30. That makes $7,969.60, or 13.3% of your income. CPP and EI take another $4,339.75 and you keep $47,690.66.
Try the same pay in Nova Scotia and the tax is $10,933.91. Same federal bill, but the provincial part is $5,595.62 there. Where you live on December 31 sets your province for the whole year, so a move late in the year still counts as a full year in the new place.
Do you need a Lethbridge tax preparer at all?
Often not. If your income is one or two T4 slips, the standard credits and maybe an RRSP receipt, you can file yourself and it takes an evening. A preparer earns the fee when you have self-employment, rental income, foreign income or a year with big changes such as a death, a move or a new business.
Ask the person you’re considering three things. What’s the fee for my return, in dollars? Is it tied to my refund? Who signs off on it? If the answers are vague, that tells you something.
Free help with your taxes in Lethbridge
The CRA supports free tax clinics run by community groups. They’re aimed at people with a modest income and a simple tax situation, and the income guideline depends on family size. Each organization can adjust it locally. We couldn’t confirm which Lethbridge groups host clinics this season, so search the CRA’s free tax clinic page or ask at a community centre.
Refund advances and other traps
An advance on your refund is a loan against the CRA’s payment. By CRA rules the provider must pay at least 85 cents on each dollar of the first $300 and 95 cents on each dollar above. Ask for the written statement, Form RC71, and read it before you sign. If your actual refund lands $10 or more over their estimate, they must pay the difference.
Work it out: an estimated $1,000 refund pays out at least $255 plus $665, which is $920. The fee could be as high as $80 for money that would have arrived anyway.
The other trap is a return you never saw. You sign the T183 form, and that authorizes the electronic filing, so read the return first. The CRA says you should keep your documents for at least six years.
What to do with the refund
If a refund is coming, decide before it arrives. The tax refund calculator estimates it, and the RRSP calculator shows what a deposit would do over the years. For a small business, the GST/HST calculator handles the 5% Alberta rate, and because there’s no provincial tax you only track one figure.
Where the numbers come from
Alberta brackets and the $22,769 basic personal amount are from the CRA payroll tables (T4032AB, January 2026) as recorded in this site’s data. The calculator results use 2026 federal and provincial figures. Preparer, discounter and clinic details come from CRA pages on using a tax preparer, discounters and free tax clinics. This site is not connected to the CRA or any tax firm.
