Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check
Tax services near me can mean four different jobs: preparing a return, keeping your books, planning for a big change, or dealing with a letter from the CRA. Work out which one you need first, because the person who’s good at the first isn’t always right for the fourth. A simple return can be done free or cheap. A dispute or a business is another matter.
We can’t recommend a firm, and we couldn’t confirm what any service charges, so we’ve left prices out. Use this page to match the service to the problem, and to show up with the right paperwork so nobody has to book a second visit.
Which tax services near me fit my problem?
| Your problem | Service to look for |
|---|---|
| Yearly return, slips only | Software, free clinic or a preparer who files by EFILE |
| Side income or rental income | Preparer or accountant who knows T1 business and rental schedules |
| Running a business | Accountant, plus bookkeeping |
| Owe tax every year | Someone to plan instalments |
| CRA letter or unfiled years | Accountant, ideally before you reply |
Not every shop covers everything. Ask before you book, and don’t assume that a busy storefront in February will take on a rental file or a back-year return in the middle of the season. A simple “do you do returns with rental income?” saves both of you a wasted trip.
What’s the cost of getting it wrong?
Here’s a case that surprises people. You earn $70,000 in Ontario and your employer withholds tax as usual. Then you pick up $12,000 of side income with nothing withheld.
Our income tax calculator puts your tax at $11,134 on the job alone and $14,842 with the extra money. That’s $3,708 more, or about 31 cents on each dollar, and it arrives as a bill in April.
If you’d rather see the rate itself, the marginal tax rate calculator shows what your next dollar costs. The rental income tax calculator does the same job for property income.
When do instalments come into it?
Once you owe a real amount each year, the CRA can expect you to pay in quarters. In our data the threshold is $3,000 of net tax owing ($1,800 for Quebec), for the current year and in either of the two years before. The usual dates are 15 March, 15 June, 15 September and 15 December. We couldn’t confirm the 2027 dates, so look at the CRA page for individuals’ due dates.
The tax instalments calculator splits a yearly amount into four equal payments. It’s the only method it offers, which makes it a quick check and not a full plan.
Ask which amount they’re using. That’s it.
What should you bring to any appointment?
Bring the same folder whatever service you pick. Your T-slips, your SIN, ID, last year’s notice of assessment, receipts for claims, RRSP slips, and for business or rental income a simple list of income and costs by month. Have any CRA letter with you too, unopened envelopes included if that’s the state of things.
The CRA suggests keeping slips, receipts and signed forms for at least six years. Ask the service what copies they keep and for how long.
How do you check a service before signing?
Ask if they file through the CRA’s EFILE service. The CRA lists certified providers in a directory, so you can look for them there. Ask who signs the return, and read what you sign. You remain responsible for your return no matter who prepared it.
Before they contact the CRA on your behalf, you authorize them yourself in My Account. It stays active until you or they cancel it or it expires. So cancel it when you leave.
Anyone who quotes a refund before seeing your slips is guessing. Simple as that. Anyone who advises a scheme that “wipes out” your tax is worth avoiding, and the CRA has a page warning about such schemes.
Where the numbers come from
Estimates use our 2026 engine with the Canada Revenue Agency’s federal and Ontario rates. Preparer, record keeping and authorization details come from CRA pages on using a tax preparer and authorizing a representative. Instalment thresholds and dates come from the CRA’s individuals pages, and 2027 dates were not available. This site has no link to the CRA.
