Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check
The best tax consultant near you is one who has filed returns like yours and lets you check their work. A search for “tax consultant near me” can’t tell you that. It gives you distance and star ratings, and neither says whether the person can handle your rental income or three years of unfiled returns. We don’t rate or recommend any local firm here, because we can’t verify one. What we can do is show you how to choose, and what you should hold on to.
What does a tax consultant do that software doesn’t?
For a plain T4 return, very little. The software asks the same questions a preparer would, and the calculators do the sums. A consultant earns their fee when your situation has moving parts: self-employment, a rental, a move between provinces, a death in the family, or a letter from the CRA you don’t understand.
So start by naming your problem. “I need my taxes done” is a weak brief. “I have a T4, some Uber income and a basement rental” tells a consultant quickly whether they’re the right person or should point you elsewhere.
How do you pick one from a list of fifty names?
Ask three things on the first call, and note whether the answers come easily.
- Do you file electronically, and are you certified to do it with the CRA?
- How many returns like mine do you do in a year?
- How do you set your fee, and will I get it in writing before you start?
The CRA keeps a directory of firms and individuals certified to file returns through its electronic service, so you can look a name up rather than trusting a website. We couldn’t confirm what a typical fee is, and it varies too much by city and by return to quote one. Get two quotes and compare what each covers.
Distance matters less than people think. It’s tempting to pick the office you can walk to, and if that office happens to know your kind of return, good, but nobody should choose it for the parking alone. Most of the work is done by uploading slips, so a consultant two cities away who knows farm income beats a neighbour who has never seen it.
What should you check before handing over your slips?
Three things are worth a minute. First, that the return will be signed by the person who prepared it. Second, that you’ll get a copy. Third, that the preparer asks for your slips and receipts, rather than promising a number before seeing anything.
The CRA warns against preparers who offer unusually large refunds, or who suggest claims you don’t have, such as donations, child care or business expenses. It’s blunt about it, and so are we. If a refund sounds too good, ask which line it comes from. And remember the return is yours: even when someone else prepares it, you’re responsible for what it says.
When you use a preparer for the first time, they may ask for access to your CRA account. Since 15 July 2025, requests for individuals go through the “Represent a Client” service, and you approve them in your own account. Hand over your CRA password and you’ve given away far more than a preparer needs.
When is a paid tax consultant worth the fee?
Take an Ontario employee on $60,000 with $9,000 of tax withheld. The tax refund calculator gives a refund of $679.50, because the tax for the year works out to $8,320.50. Now say the person put $5,000 into an RRSP and never claimed it. With that deduction the refund becomes $1,896.28, so $1,216.78 was sitting there unclaimed.
That’s the kind of gap a consultant can close. But look at what closed it: a question (“did you contribute?”) and a slip, not a secret. You can ask that question yourself, and the RRSP calculator shows what a contribution does over the years. For a return with one T4 and no deductions, you probably don’t need to pay anyone.
| Date for the 2025 return | What it is |
|---|---|
| 23 February 2026 | Earliest date the CRA accepted online filing |
| 30 April 2026 | Filing deadline for most people, and the date any tax owing was due |
| 15 June 2026 | Filing deadline if you or your spouse or partner was self-employed, but tax owing was still due 30 April |
Dates for the 2026 return haven’t been published as we write this, so check the CRA page in January before you plan around them.
What mistakes cost people money?
Waiting until April is the first. Good consultants are booked by then, and you’ll pay for rush work or get rushed work. Second, handing over half the slips. A missing T5 or T4A is how you end up with a reassessment. Third, choosing on price alone.
The fourth is expecting a preparer to fix a bad year. They can’t turn a $2,000 balance owing into a refund without a real deduction behind it. If your income moved a lot, run the income tax calculator yourself first, so you know roughly what number to expect, then compare it with what the preparer shows you.
Keep your slips, receipts and a copy of the return for at least six years. The CRA’s own page on preparers says so, and it applies whoever did the work.
If your income is modest and your return is simple, free volunteer tax clinics exist through a CRA program. We left out the income cut-offs because they can be adjusted by each clinic, so ask the clinic directly.
Where the numbers come from
Dates and the rules on preparers come from the Canada Revenue Agency’s pages for the 2025 tax return. Tax figures in the example come from the 2026 federal and Ontario tax data used by our calculators, which are estimates and not a substitute for your notice of assessment. This site has no link with the CRA.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check that a tax preparer is legitimate?
The CRA keeps a directory of firms and individuals certified to file returns electronically. Ask for their certification, and ask who signs the return.
What does a tax consultant cost?
We couldn't confirm typical fees, and they vary by city and by return. Ask for a written quote from at least two people and compare what each covers.
Should I give my preparer access to my CRA account?
Only through the CRA's Represent a Client service, where you approve the request yourself. Never share your CRA password.
