H&R Block Ottawa is a search most people make in March, when they want a person to file the return. This page assumes you mean the tax preparation franchise, and it says nothing about a specific office, its hours or its prices. What it can do is tell you what a preparer has to do for you, what the CRA says about hiring one, and how to tell if you need one at all.
Do you need an H&R Block Ottawa office or can you file yourself?
If you have one or two T4 slips, a few receipts and no business, you can probably file on your own. The CRA lists paid preparers as one way to file, next to software you use yourself. Paying someone doesn’t change the tax you owe. It buys you time.
A preparer earns the fee when the return is messy. Think rental income, a move between provinces, self-employment, a death in the family or several years of unfiled returns. A missed form there costs real money.
Compare two Ottawa households. Marc has two T4s from a job change, a T5 for a savings account and an RRSP slip. Software handles that in an evening. Nadia, down the street, has a T4, a small rental unit, a year of self-employed work on the side and a move from Gatineau in the spring. Nadia is the one who benefits from a professional, and she should expect a higher fee for it.
Here’s a rough yardstick from our own engine. An Ontario employee earning $60,000 pays about $9,250 in combined federal and Ontario income tax with only the basic personal amount claimed. That’s before credits, and it isn’t a refund figure. Your actual bill depends on what you claim, which is exactly what you’d be paying someone to get right.
What does the CRA say about hiring a tax preparer?
The CRA’s page on using a professional tax preparer is short. Read it before you commit to anything. The table pulls out what it says.
| Topic | What the CRA page says |
|---|---|
| Who counts as a preparer | A firm, an organization, a discounter or another certified individual |
| Electronic filing | Most people can file electronically; the CRA keeps a directory of certified EFILE providers |
| Your signature | You sign Part F of Form T183 so the preparer can send your return to the CRA |
| Discounters | They work out your expected refund and pay you part of it up front before filing |
| Refund timing | Your notice of assessment and any refund are usually processed within 2 weeks |
The page says nothing about what a preparer may charge. So any price you’re quoted is between you and the office, and the CRA doesn’t set it.
What should you ask before you book?
Does the office file electronically? Will it show you the return before it goes out? You should get a copy of everything. Ask what happens if the CRA writes to you later, and whether that’s included or billed separately.
Ask about the fee before you hand over a single slip, because once your documents are sitting in someone’s inbox it gets awkward to walk away. Is it one price, or does it depend on the forms? Does an amended return cost extra? Get the answer in writing if you can. No fees for any Ottawa office could be confirmed for this page, so none are guessed at here.
And be careful with anything that sounds like a refund advance. A discounter pays you against your expected refund, and that arrangement has its own cost. Read the agreement twice, and then once more with the refund figure beside it.
What should you bring to an Ottawa tax appointment?
Bring every slip, even the boring ones: T4, T5, T4A, and the RRSP receipts you got in January and February. Bring last year’s notice of assessment, because it shows your RRSP room. Bring receipts for anything you plan to claim, such as tuition, medical costs and donations. If you paid for child care, bring the provider’s details.
Ottawa has one quirk. The city sits on the Ontario side of the river, and Gatineau is across it in Quebec. A Quebec resident files a separate provincial return, so tell the preparer where you live and say if you moved. Rates in the income tax calculator change with the province you pick.
Who is responsible for the return once a preparer files it?
You are. The preparer does the typing and the checking, but the return goes out under your name, which is why the CRA has you sign the authorization first. If something is wrong, the CRA writes to you, not the office. So treat the preparer as a skilled helper, not as someone who takes the risk off your hands. Read the return, ask about any line that surprises you, and keep your own copy.
Where does this leave your refund?
Before you pay anyone, run your numbers through the tax refund calculator and compare the answer with what a preparer tells you. If the two are far apart, ask why. Sometimes there’s a good reason, like a credit the tool doesn’t model. Sometimes it’s a typo.
Short version: compare before you pay.
If your income changed a lot, look at the marginal tax rate calculator too. Extra income around $72,000 and $200,000 in Ontario is taxed harder than the brackets suggest, because the Ontario Health Premium rises in narrow bands there. A preparer should be able to explain that in a sentence. If you’re also topping up an RRSP, the RRSP tax savings calculator shows what a contribution does to the bill.
Where this information comes from
The preparer facts come from the Canada Revenue Agency‘s page on using a professional tax preparer. Tax figures come from the 2026 federal and Ontario rates and the payroll tables the CRA publishes for 2026. The $60,000 example is ours. Free tax clinics run by volunteers exist, and the CRA sets their income limits on its own pages. The dollar limits are left out because the CRA’s pages don’t agree with each other, so check the current one before you go.
Frequently asked questions
Can I trust any preparer to file my return?
Check that the office files electronically as a certified EFILE provider. The CRA keeps a directory of them, and you sign Form T183 before anything goes out.
Does a preparer change how much tax I pay?
No. The tax comes from your income and what you can claim. A preparer can help you find claims you'd miss.
How much does tax preparation cost in Ottawa?
We couldn't confirm fees for any office, so we won't quote one. Ask for the price and what it covers before you hand over your slips.
I live in Gatineau. Does the office matter?
A Quebec resident files a separate Quebec return. Tell the preparer which side of the river you live on.
How long until I get my refund?
The CRA says your notice of assessment and any refund are usually processed within 2 weeks. Direct deposit details need to be up to date.
