Free Tax Filing in Canada and How to Check Your Options

Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check

Free tax filing in Canada comes three ways: certified software with a free tier, a free tax clinic if you qualify, or a paper return. The CRA says most software will prepare a basic return at no cost for people with a modest income, and once your return gets more complex a fee is usual.

Where does free filing come from?

Every company that sells online tax software has to get its product certified by the CRA each year. Some of those programs offer a free version, and eligibility depends on your income or your tax situation. H&R Block is one well known name, but we aren’t comparing brands here, and prices and free tiers change from year to year, so read the terms on the provider’s own site before you start.

The second route is a free tax clinic. If you’re eligible, you can have your return prepared by invitation or at a clinic at no cost. The program sets the eligibility rules, so ask before you book.

What should you check before you pick one?

Question Why it matters
Is the product on the CRA certified list? Only certified products can send a return through NETFILE
Which forms does the free tier include? Rental, business or investment income may need a paid tier
Does it support Auto-fill my return? It fills in parts of your return from CRA records
Are prior years included? Certified software covers 2018 to 2025 returns
What does support cost? Live help may cost extra
Can you print or save the return? You may need a copy for a loan or rental

Lay the free tier’s form list next to your own slips before you choose. Free doesn’t mean every slip is covered.

Can you still file a 2025 return online?

Yes. NETFILE and ReFILE opened on February 23, 2026 and stay open until January 29, 2027, so late 2025 returns can still go in online. That doesn’t move any deadline or waive interest, though, and a balance owing is still due on time. The tax refund calculator states that balances are due by April 30.

What should you have ready before you start?

Gather your slips first: T4s from employers, T5s from banks and RRSP receipts. If the software offers Auto-fill my return, you’ll need to be signed in to your CRA account, and it’s still worth comparing the slips it pulls in against the paper or PDF copies, since a missing one is easy to miss. Save the finished return as a PDF before you submit it. You may need it later for a loan, a rental application or a benefit review.

Could free software cost you money?

It can, if it misses a claim. Take a single person in Ontario with $60,000 of employment income and $8,000 of tax withheld. The tax refund calculator shows tax for the year of $8,320.50, so they owe $320.50. Add a $3,000 deduction, such as an RRSP contribution, and tax falls to $7,566.72, which turns the balance into a refund of $433.28.

Free software only uses the deductions you enter. Miss that $3,000 and you’ve missed $753.78 of tax relief in this case, so a cheap product that overlooks claims can cost you more than a paid one that finds them.

To see how your total tax is built, use the income tax calculator. For credits people forget, try the tax credits calculator. Filing also decides which benefits you receive, and the GST/HST credit calculator shows one of them.

What are the catches?

  • Don’t assume free covers every slip. Check the list of forms first.
  • Keep your receipts. The software doesn’t verify them.
  • Read the privacy terms and the upsell screens before you enter your details.
  • We couldn’t confirm which brands offer a free tier this year, or on what terms, so we don’t claim any.

Where the numbers come from

Filing dates, the certified software rules and the description of free help come from Canada Revenue Agency pages on tax software and NETFILE, read in September 2026. Refund figures use 2026 federal and Ontario tax data on this site. No government body or software company is connected to this website.

Frequently asked questions

Can I file my Canadian taxes for free?

Yes, if your return is basic. The CRA says most certified software prepares a basic return free for modest incomes, and free clinics exist for eligible people.

Does free software have to be certified?

To send your return online through NETFILE, yes. The CRA publishes the list of certified products.

Is a free return less accurate?

Not by itself. A program only uses what you enter or import, so the result depends on your slips and claims.

Can I still file a 2025 return late online?

Yes. NETFILE stays open until January 29, 2027, but the filing deadline and interest rules don't change.

When would I need a paid tier?

Rental, business or complex investment income often calls for one. Check the free tier's form list before you start.
