Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check
A Quebec tax refund is the money Revenu Québec owes you when the provincial tax withheld from your pay is more than your Quebec return says you owe. Revenu Québec says a notice of assessment generally comes within 14 days for a return filed online and 28 days for one filed by mail, and processing begins in March.
Waiting is the boring part.
What you can control is whether the refund is real, how big it is and how fast it lands.
How long does a Quebec tax refund take?
| How you file | Usual wait for a notice of assessment |
|---|---|
| Online | 14 days |
| By mail | 28 days |
Those are service targets from Revenu Québec, not promises, and they assume a return with no errors. A return filed in January still starts to be processed in March, so early filers shouldn’t panic in February. If the notice hasn’t come, My Account for individuals shows the status of the current year’s return, and there’s a refund info-line too.
The refund is paid into your bank account if you’ve registered for direct deposit. Revenu Québec pays it when it sends the notice of assessment, or earlier if you asked for an accelerated refund. That’s a separate option on the return, and we haven’t confirmed its conditions, so read Revenu Québec’s page on it before you rely on it.
Why hasn’t your Quebec refund arrived yet?
Start by counting from the right date. Revenu Québec has said it starts processing returns in early March and asks people to wait until early April before calling. If you filed after March 31, it suggests giving it four weeks first. Our source for those dates is a search summary of its pages, since the site wouldn’t open for us, so check the wording on its refund page.
Two things often stretch the wait. A return with a mistake or a missing slip takes longer, and a bank account that isn’t set up for direct deposit means a cheque in the mail. Also remember you’ve filed two returns. Your federal return goes to the CRA and your Quebec return goes to Revenu Québec, so one refund can show up days before the other.
Why do you get a Quebec refund at all?
Because your employer withholds a guess. Payroll deductions assume you earn the same all year and claim only the basic credits. Your return then adds what the guess missed, such as RRSP contributions, tuition, child care or medical costs, and the difference comes back to you. Too much withheld, you get a refund. Too little, you owe.
Try the tax refund calculator with your slip amounts to see which way you’re heading. And if a big refund is a yearly habit, you’re lending the government your own money for a year.
What does Quebec tax look like on $90,000?
Quebec residents have two returns. Federal tax goes to the CRA, whose rates page hands Quebec residents over to Revenu Québec for the provincial part. Our income tax calculator handles both for Quebec, including the 16.5% federal abatement (a reduction in federal tax for Quebec residents).
At $90,000 of taxable income and the basic personal amounts only, we get about $10,306 of federal tax and $11,729 of Quebec tax. Total: about $22,035. At $60,000 the figures are $5,171 and $6,029, or $11,200.
Now compare that with the total shown on your slips. Say Camille in Sherbrooke had $23,500 withheld across the year: the refund would be about $1,465. If $21,000 had been withheld, she’d owe about $1,035. Those withholding amounts are made up to show the sum, and your own slips will differ.
How can you make your refund bigger, or smaller?
Deductions cut taxable income, so they raise a refund. An RRSP deposit is the common one, and the RRSP calculator gives an estimate of the saving. The marginal tax rate calculator shows what each extra deducted dollar is worth to you.
But bigger isn’t better in itself. A refund means you overpaid during the year. For most people, the aim is a refund near zero, with the money in their pocket earlier, not sitting with the taxman until spring.
What mistakes and limits should you watch for?
Our figures leave out Quebec’s work deduction, the QPP, QPIP and EI amounts, and every refundable credit. That’s why they’ll sit above a real return for most employees, since every one of those items lowers the tax you owe rather than adding to it. They also can’t say what Revenu Québec will assess, since it can adjust a return after filing.
Another slip-up is mixing up the two payments. A refund of provincial tax and a refund of federal tax are separate, so don’t phone one agency about the other’s money.
Where we got these figures
Quebec brackets and the basic amount are 2026 figures held in our data files, checked against the Revenu Québec 2026 rates. Federal rates come from the CRA‘s 2026 rates page. Timing comes from Revenu Québec’s pages on notices of assessment and refunds. This is an independent site, not linked to either agency.
