Income tax payable is the tax you owe for the year before anything already paid is taken off. On a return, it’s the total at line 43500. Someone earning $70,000 from one Ontario job has $11,133.91 of federal and Ontario income tax payable in 2026, or 15.9% of pay, by our calculator.
How is income tax payable worked out?
Start at net income (line 23600) and subtract your deductions to get taxable income at line 26000. The CRA shows it as line 23600 minus line 25700, where 25700 adds up the lines from 24400 to 25600. Tax comes from applying rates to that taxable figure, and then your credits reduce the result.
Line 43500 is bigger than the tax alone. The CRA’s line 43500 page says it holds federal and provincial or territorial tax owed before you take off credits already paid, plus CPP and EI premiums payable on self-employment and other eligible earnings, and a few other items like social benefits repayment.
What are the 2026 federal tax rates?
The federal rates are progressive, so each rate hits only the slice of taxable income inside its band. That’s why a raise never drops your whole paycheque into a worse bracket, a myth that still floats around every tax time.
| Taxable income | Federal rate, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Up to $58,523 | 14% |
| $58,523 to $117,045 | 20.5% |
| $117,045 to $181,440 | 26% |
| $181,440 to $258,482 | 29% |
| Over $258,482 | 33% |
Ontario adds its own scale: 5.05% to $53,891, 9.15% to $107,785, 11.16% to $150,000, 12.16% to $220,000 and 13.16% above that, along with a surtax and a health premium at higher incomes. Other provinces differ. Both scales are on the CRA’s 2026 tax rates and income brackets page.
What’s the payable on $70,000?
Take $70,000 of employment income in Ontario. The income tax calculator lands on taxable income of $69,335, after the extra CPP contribution is deducted. Federal tax is $7,278.19 and Ontario tax is $3,855.73. Total $11,133.91.
CPP and EI are separate on a T4 job. They come to $5,079.82, and $53,786.27 is left. For budgeting, use that last figure: tax alone hides roughly $5,000 that also leaves your pay. Think of it as your ballpark take-home for the year, before benefits or union dues.
Is income tax payable the same as what you owe?
No, and this trips up a lot of people. Payable is the bill. Balance owing is the bill minus what’s already been paid, mainly tax your employer withheld. The CRA describes it as total payable (line 43500) compared with total credits (line 48200): if the credits are bigger you get a refund, if payable is bigger you owe the difference, and if they match, it’s nil.
With $12,000 withheld on that $70,000 job, the tax refund calculator shows a refund of $866.09. With $10,000 withheld you’d owe $1,133.91.
A quick way to see where you stand: look at the income tax deducted box on your T4 and compare it with your payable. Sam in Calgary, who sees $9,200 in that box but a payable of $10,400, knows before filing that about $1,200 is coming due.
Where does the estimate go wrong?
The calculator counts the basic personal amount, the Canada employment amount, and CPP and EI credits. It leaves out benefits, refundable credits and other claims, so real payable on your return can be lower. Check the tax credits calculator for the federal ones you might be missing.
The tax on your next dollar can also surprise you. Use the marginal tax rate calculator before you take on extra work. It shows 73% in Ontario near $200,000, and that figure hasn’t been tested, so treat numbers in that zone with caution.
Self-employed people have a bigger line 43500, because both halves of CPP land on it. Try the self-employed tax calculator, but know that it leaves out EI.

Rates and brackets are the 2026 federal and Ontario figures published by the Canada Revenue Agency and the Government of Ontario, checked on 29 September 2026. The line descriptions come from the CRA’s return pages. This is an independent information site, not a government service, and it doesn’t speak for one.
