Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check
Looking for a Canada tax centre near you? Here’s the catch: the CRA’s contact page doesn’t list walk-in tax centres for regular filers. It points people to phone lines, online chat and My Account, and says many tasks can be done without speaking to anyone. So if a website promises a “tax centre” in your city, check who runs it before you hand over documents.
Where can you actually get help with your taxes?
There are more options than a storefront, and several cost nothing. The table shows what we could confirm on canada.ca. We didn’t find phone numbers or office addresses worth quoting, since they change, so use the CRA contact page for those.
| Option | What it does | Confirmed on canada.ca |
|---|---|---|
| CRA phone lines | Answers questions about your account and return | Usually Monday to Friday, 8 am to 8 pm ET |
| CRA My Account | Refund status, payments, notices, address changes | Sign in with a bank partner or a CRA user ID |
| Online chat and chatbot | Quick answers on some topics | Chatbot available 24/7 |
| Free community tax clinics | Volunteers complete returns | For modest income and a simple tax situation |
| Certified tax software | You file online yourself | Works with NETFILE |
Are there free tax clinics?
Yes. The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program runs through community groups, and volunteers prepare returns for people with a modest income and a simple situation. Quebec has its own version. The CRA has a clinic search on its website where you pick a location and a clinic type. We couldn’t find the exact income limits on the page we read, so check them on the eligibility link before you go.
Is My Account worth setting up?
For most people, yes. It shows your refund status, lets you make payments and holds your notices of assessment, which the CRA now issues digitally only. You can sign in with the online banking login from a partner bank, or with a CRA user ID and password. The CRA also asks for a backup multi-factor method, so set that up before you need it in April.
Don’t use autofill for your banking details on a shared computer. The CRA warns about that on its sign-in page.
What should you bring to any tax appointment?
Your slips, first. T4s, T5s and similar forms should be out by the end of February, and if one is missing after March 31 the CRA tells you to contact the issuer. Then last year’s notice of assessment, your social insurance number, receipts for anything you plan to claim and a void cheque or bank details for direct deposit.
Keep copies of everything you hand over. The CRA says to keep tax records for at least six years, and that’s your job, not the preparer’s.
How much refund might a return bring?
That comes down to what was taken off your pay during the year. Say you earned $50,000 of taxable income in Ontario and only the basic personal amounts apply. The income tax calculator gives $4,696.72 federal and $2,469.06 Ontario, so $7,165.78 in all. That’s 14.3% of income.
If your employer withheld $8,000 during the year, the difference is a refund of about $834. (The $8,000 is only for the example.) Try your own figures in the tax refund calculator, and see what else you could claim with the tax credits calculator, which is federal only.
What should make you walk away?
Anyone who says they can guarantee a bigger refund. Anyone who asks for a fee that’s a percentage of your refund without putting it in writing. Anyone who won’t sign the return as the preparer, or who wants your refund sent to their account instead of yours. We can’t tell you what a fair fee is, because we couldn’t confirm any, so compare quotes.
And don’t share your CRA sign-in details with a stranger. If a preparer needs access to your file, ask how they get it and get that answer in writing.
Where the numbers come from
The support options are from the Canada Revenue Agency’s contact and filing-season pages, and the clinic details from its volunteer program page. Tax figures use the 2026 federal and Ontario rates. This site has no link with the CRA or any government office.
