Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check
The ACCA qualification comes from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, and it isn’t a Canadian designation. Since 30 April 2021 there’s been no automatic route from ACCA to CPA, because the mutual recognition agreement between ACCA and CPA Canada expired that day.
What happened to the ACCA agreement?
For years, ACCA members could apply for the CPA designation under an agreement between the two bodies. That agreement ran out on 30 April 2021. CPA Alberta’s page puts it bluntly: it is no longer accepting applications under it.
People who had a complete application in, and met the conditions by the cutoff, were still considered under the old terms. If you weren’t one of them, the old fast lane is closed.
Many older articles get this wrong. They describe the agreement as if it were still live, and some of them rank well. If a page says ACCA converts straight to CPA, look at its date.
Can you still become a CPA with ACCA?
Yes. It’s an assessment, though, and it isn’t a swap.
Both CPA Canada and the provincial bodies say they remain committed to pathways for internationally trained accountants, and those pathways are run by the provincial body where you plan to work, which means the steps, the paperwork and the wait all depend on which province you pick and what your transcripts and work history show.
We couldn’t confirm the current exam or course requirements from an official page we could open, so we won’t list them. Ask the province directly, and ask early, because the process involves your transcripts and your work history.
How the two compare side by side
| Question | ACCA | CPA (Canada) |
|---|---|---|
| Who grants it | ACCA | The provincial CPA body |
| Direct conversion in Canada | Ended 30 April 2021 | Not applicable |
| Can you be checked in a public directory | Through ACCA | Through the provincial body |
| Route today | Apply as an internationally trained accountant | Program or assessment |
Does the ACCA qualification still count in Canada?
It can open doors to bookkeeping, finance and audit support jobs, and a provincial body will treat it as real training when it assesses you. It won’t let you use the CPA title here. Not by itself.
Should you start the Canadian process right away? If your plan is public practice, where signing off on audits and reviews is the work, yes. If you’re heading into industry finance, some people never bother. We couldn’t verify hiring preferences, so ask two employers in your field what they look for.
Pay is worth a look before you commit. Suppose a role starts at $65,000 in Ontario. After tax, CPP and EI you’d take home about $50,556 a year, which you can reproduce with the take-home pay calculator. Hold that against what the extra years of exams and fees would cost you.
Newcomers also need to sort out their own filing. The income tax calculator shows what a first-year Canadian salary leaves, and the payroll deductions calculator breaks the pay stub into its parts.
Mistakes to avoid
Don’t put CPA after your name because you hold ACCA. Check what your province says about titles before you print anything. Don’t pay a third party for a “guaranteed” CPA pathway either, since only the provincial body decides, and no outside firm can promise it.
And don’t assume the rules are the same everywhere. Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia each run their own admissions, and the page you read might be for a different province than yours.
Where the numbers come from
The agreement dates come from CPA Alberta’s ACCA page, which states the 30 April 2021 expiry, and from CPA Canada’s notices on the agreement. Pay and tax figures come from our calculators, using 2026 federal and Ontario rates from the CRA. We have no tie to ACCA, CPA Canada or any government.
Frequently asked questions
What does ACCA stand for?
Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. It is a professional body, and its qualification is not a Canadian designation.
Can ACCA members still become CPAs?
Not through the old agreement, which expired on 30 April 2021. Internationally trained accountants can still apply through the provincial CPA body, which assesses each case.
Did anyone get grandfathered in?
CPA Alberta says complete applications that met the conditions by the cutoff were still considered under the agreement. New applications aren't accepted under it.
Can I call myself a CPA with only ACCA?
Check your province's rules on titles first. The CPA designation is granted by the provincial bodies, not by ACCA.
Who decides my pathway?
The provincial CPA body where you plan to work. Steps can differ between provinces, so ask the one that applies to you.
