What Does Tax Preparation Cost in Canada?

Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check

We can’t give you an honest average for tax preparation cost in Canada. The CRA doesn’t publish one, preparers set their own fees, and the price depends on how tangled your return is. What we can do is show you what a quote should cover, and where filing costs nothing.

Why is there no standard tax preparation cost?

Fees vary by firm, city and the work involved. A single T4 and a few receipts is one job. Rental income, a T2125 for a side business, a foreign account and a spouse’s return in the same file is another. The old habit of quoting one flat number for everybody is where most online “averages” come from, and none of the ones we found named an official source.

So skip the averages. Ask two or three preparers for a written quote on your actual return, and compare the same scope.

What should a tax preparation quote spell out?

A price alone tells you nothing. Ask for these five points in writing before you hand over documents.

  • Which forms and schedules the price covers, especially the T2125 if you’re self-employed.
  • Whether GST/HST returns are included or billed separately.
  • What they charge if you need a change made after filing.
  • What happens if the CRA writes to you about the return later.
  • How they file, and if you get a full copy of the return.

On that last point, the CRA says a preparer who gets paid to prepare more than 10 returns must file them electronically, and you sign form T183 before they transmit. If a preparer wants to mail paper for you, ask why.

Can you file your taxes for free?

Often, yes. The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program runs free clinics where volunteers complete returns for people with a modest income and a simple tax situation. The CRA’s income guidelines have appeared in different forms on different pages, so we’ve left the dollar figures out. Check the CRA’s free tax clinics page for the current ones and for a clinic near you.

The other route is certified tax software, which you use yourself. The CRA lists the certified products each year, and each vendor sets its own price, so check that before you start. The software sends the return by NETFILE. For the 2025 return that service opened February 23, 2026 and stays open until January 29, 2027.

Situation What the CRA offers
Modest income, simple return Free clinic through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program
Comfortable filing yourself CRA-certified software, sent by NETFILE
Paid preparer, more than 10 returns a year Must file electronically (EFILE)
2025 return, most people File and pay by April 30, 2026
2025 return, self-employed File by June 15, 2026, pay by April 30, 2026

When does a paid preparer earn the fee?

When they find something you’d have missed, or when a mistake would cost more than they charge. Take a freelancer with $80,000 of net income in Ontario. The self-employed tax calculator puts income tax and CPP at $22,126. Knock $5,000 off that profit with a proper, documented expense and the figure drops to $20,213, about $1,900 less.

That’s the arithmetic a good preparer is working on. But a receipt you can’t produce is worth nothing. The saving only exists if the records back it up.

For a plain employment return, the gap is smaller. Run your numbers through the tax refund calculator first, and if the result looks routine, free software or a clinic may be all you need.

What goes wrong when you hire someone?

You still sign the return, so the numbers on it are yours. Read it before you agree, especially the income lines and the deductions, because nobody else knows your year as well as you do and a wrong figure is far easier to fix before it’s sent than after.

Get the balance owing worked out early too. If you have business income, the tax instalments calculator shows what to set aside during the year so April doesn’t hurt.

Where the numbers come from

Filing dates, NETFILE and EFILE details and the free clinic description come from Canada Revenue Agency pages, read in September 2026. The calculator figures use our 2026 tax data. We couldn’t confirm any fee level from an official or independent source, so this page names none. We also couldn’t find the filing dates for the 2026 return, which the CRA hadn’t published when we checked.

Frequently asked questions

Does the CRA set a price for tax preparation?

No. Preparers set their own fees, and we found no official average to quote.

Who can use a free tax clinic?

People with a modest income and a simple tax situation. The CRA's free tax clinics page has the current guidelines and a way to find a clinic.

Do I have to use a paid preparer if I'm self-employed?

No. Certified software handles a T2125, though a preparer can help if your expenses or GST/HST are complicated.

Can my preparer file on paper?

A preparer paid for more than 10 returns a year must file electronically. Ask about it if you're offered paper.

What's the deadline for the 2025 return?

April 30, 2026 for most people. The self-employed had until June 15, 2026, but any tax owing was still due April 30.
