How to Choose a Tax Preparer in Toronto

Updated Checked by the Tax-Services.ca editorial team How we check

Finding a Toronto tax preparer takes about ten minutes if you know what to check. Confirm the preparer is in the CRA’s EFILE directory, ask what they charge before they start, and read the return before you sign it. Free help exists too, if your income is modest and your return is simple.

Who can prepare my return in Toronto?

The CRA says a preparer can be a firm, an organization, a discounter or another certified individual. A national chain such as H&R Block is one example of the first kind, and so is the accountant with two desks above a bakery. What matters is the certification, not the size.

Preparers in the CRA directory are certified to send returns through EFILE. Search there first. We couldn’t confirm which Toronto offices are listed today, so treat any firm’s own claims as something to check against the directory.

What should I ask before I hire anyone?

Question Why it matters
Are you in the CRA EFILE directory? Certified preparers can send your return directly
What will my return cost, in writing? Fees vary and we couldn’t confirm any firm’s price
Is a refund advance a loan, and what does it cost? Discounters take a share of your refund
Will I see the return before it goes? You must review it and sign the declaration
Do I get copies of everything? You keep slips, receipts and Form T183 for six years

The T183 is the form that authorizes the preparer to file for you. Don’t sign it blank.

What does a good preparer actually save you?

Less than the advertising suggests, and sometimes a lot, depending on what you’d have missed. Here’s a real measure. An Ontario employee on $85,000 pays $15,551.05 in federal and Ontario income tax, according to the income tax calculator, plus $5,769.52 of CPP and EI.

Now say a $5,000 deduction was overlooked, such as an RRSP contribution. With it, income tax falls to $14,068.55. That’s $1,482.50 back, and it’s the kind of claim to ask about at the first meeting.

Not every missed item is that big.

A tidy return with one T4 and no odd slips may save you nothing over doing it yourself, and paying for that is a choice, not a rule.

Is free tax help available in Toronto?

Yes. The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program runs free clinics for people with modest income and simple tax situations. The CRA has a clinic locator on its site. We couldn’t confirm the income limits from the CRA page we read, so check the eligibility page before you go.

If you would rather do it yourself, the tax refund calculator gives a rough answer in seconds, and the tax credits calculator shows federal credits you may be able to claim. Both are estimates. Neither replaces the return.

What if the return has a mistake?

You’re still responsible for it, even when someone else typed it in. That’s why the CRA tells you to review the prepared return and the T183 before you authorize anything. Look at the income figures first, and compare each one to your slips.

Self-employed? Your filing date is June 15, but any balance is due April 30. On $80,000 of net business income in Ontario, the self-employed tax calculator shows $22,126.47 of income tax and CPP, since you pay both halves of CPP. It leaves out GST/HST, EI and business expenses.

When does the work have to be done?

Most people file and pay by April 30. If you or your spouse ran a business, filing moves to June 15, though payment doesn’t. Hand your papers over early, because a preparer with your slips in February is a preparer who isn’t rushing in April.

Since 15 July 2025, preparers can’t ask for access to an individual’s CRA account through EFILE. They use the Represent a Client service instead, so expect them to ask you to approve access there.

Where the numbers come from

Preparer guidance and dates come from Canada Revenue Agency pages read on 30 September 2026. Tax figures use the 2026 federal and Ontario rates in our calculators. We don’t rank or price any firm, and this site has no link with the CRA or any tax company.
