# Newfoundland and Labrador income tax in 2026

> How Newfoundland and Labrador income tax works in 2026: eight brackets, a basic personal amount that changes mid-year, the 15% HST and the calculators

Newfoundland and Labrador is the province where the headline number and the number you actually use can differ, so this page is careful about which is which. It covers the brackets, the credit and the sales tax.

## What are the brackets for 2026?

The rate is 8.7% on your first $44,678 of taxable income, 14.5% up to $89,354, 15.8% up to $159,528, 17.8% up to $223,340, 19.8% up to $285,319, 20.8% up to $570,638 and 21.3% up to $1,141,275. Above that it's 21.8%. The [limits page](https://tax-services.ca/tax-numbers) lists the federal brackets that go with them, and the [CRA page on 2026 tax rates and income brackets](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/tax-rates-brackets/current-year.html) shows the same provincial figures.

Take $60,000. The first $44,678 costs you $3,887 and the other $15,322 costs you $2,222, which makes $6,109. The basic amount credit takes off $1,139, so you'd pay about $4,970 of provincial tax. As a ballpark, that's roughly $414 a month out of your paycheque for the provincial slice alone, before federal tax, CPP and EI.

## What's different about the basic personal amount?

This is the part to watch. The CRA's January tables showed $11,188. Then the provincial budget raised it to $15,000. The payroll tables handle that by using $13,094 for the year, an average of the two, and the annual return uses the same $13,094. From 2027 the full $15,000 is expected to apply to returns.

So the credit you claim for 2026 isn't the $15,000 you may have read about. It's smaller, and sources don't always say so. The gap is real money: at the 8.7% credit rate, $13,094 is worth $1,139 and $15,000 would be worth $1,305.

## How much does the second bracket cost me?

The rate leaps from 8.7% to 14.5% at $44,678. On $60,000, about a quarter of your income, $15,322 of it, is taxed at the higher rate. A $1,000 raise past that line adds $145 of provincial tax, against $87 below it.

## How does the HST work here?

You pay 15% HST, the federal 5% plus a provincial 10%, collected as one tax. A $200 bill comes to $230. The [GST and HST calculator](https://tax-services.ca/calculators/sales-tax/gst-hst-calculator) works for the province, and the [sales tax guide](https://tax-services.ca/guides/gst-hst-pst) compares the rest.

## Which calculators include it?

The [income tax calculator](https://tax-services.ca/calculators/income-tax/income-tax-calculator) and the [take-home pay calculator](https://tax-services.ca/calculators/payroll-salary/take-home-pay-calculator) both include Newfoundland and Labrador. Pick it from the list and the Newfoundland and Labrador rates apply. Check the basic personal amount on your own return before you rely on a result.

## Guides on this topic

## Before you rely on these numbers

Rates and credits do change, so check three things before you act on any figure here: the date at the top of the page, the CRA source we name, and your own slip or notice. Your slip or notice always wins if it differs from a summary like this one.

Don't guess.

Not sure where to start? Our [filing guide](https://tax-services.ca/guides/file-your-taxes) walks you through the steps, the [document checklist](https://tax-services.ca/checklists/documents-for-your-tax-return) shows what you'll need, and the [province index](https://tax-services.ca/provinces) lets you compare where you live with other places. Is your situation unusual? Then a qualified preparer is the right call, and we can't advise you ourselves.
