# How we collect information: sources and checks

> Where the facts on Tax-Services.ca come from, how each figure is recorded with its source and date, and what we do when official sources disagree.

The information on this site comes from open sources: the public pages of the Canada Revenue Agency, Service Canada, Revenu Québec and the provincial and territorial governments. We do not use private data, and we do not ask readers for tax details. This page explains where each kind of fact comes from, how we record it, what we do when sources disagree, and how often we look again.

## What do we collect, and from where?

- Rates, thresholds, limits and dates come from the body that sets them. Federal income tax, CPP, EI and GST/HST rules come from the [Canada Revenue Agency](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency.html) and Service Canada. Quebec taxes and the QPP come from Revenu Québec. Provincial brackets, credits, land transfer tax and minimum wages come from each province or territory.

- The wording of a rule is taken from the official page that describes it, so a guide does not stray from what the government says.

- Mortgage rules follow the federal lending guidelines and the published tables of the mortgage insurers.

Some things are never a source: other calculators, forums, social media, paid tax services and emails from readers. A reader's message can tell us where to look, but a figure only goes on a page once an official page confirms it.

## How is each fact recorded?

Every figure in our data files carries the address of the page it came from and the date we read it. Each guide ends with a short section called "Where does this information come from?", which names the sources and the date the page was checked. When a number comes from a table inside a PDF, we note the page. You can follow any source link and compare our wording with the official one, which is the reference if the two ever differ.

## What happens when sources disagree or say nothing?

Sometimes a source is silent, or two official pages show different figures. Then we take the more careful reading, label the result as an estimate, and say on the page which figure we could not confirm. We do not fill a gap with a guess presented as a fact. The open points are reviewed at every update, and the note comes off once the government publishes a clear answer.

## How often do we look again?

We review rates and limits every January and July, and again when a budget measure, a minimum wage change or a new rule takes effect. For figures that are not published yet, such as some amounts for 2027, we check the official pages regularly and change the page when the figure appears. The date on a page is the day it was last checked or changed. Our [rate checking page](https://tax-services.ca/how-we-check-rates) describes the tests behind the calculators, and the [updates page](https://tax-services.ca/updates) lists the changes.

## What do we collect about you?

We do not ask for your social insurance number or any detail from your tax return, and please do not send any. The calculators run in your browser. What the site itself collects, such as cookies used for advertising and measurement, is described on the [privacy policy](https://tax-services.ca/privacy-policy) and [cookies](https://tax-services.ca/cookies) pages.

## What if you find a mistake?

Tell us on the [contact page](https://tax-services.ca/contact), with the page address and, if you can, a link to the official page that shows something different. The [corrections policy](https://tax-services.ca/corrections) explains what happens next, and the [editorial team page](https://tax-services.ca/editorial-team) describes how a page is made.
